One of my 2009 goals is to go through and clean out my photo folders - getting rid of photos I'll never use. The problem is, to do so, you have to be "done" looking through them and finding the gems. But I take a lot of pictures, and I rarely have enough time to go through and finish processing all the candidates into "masters" (e.g., for printing and/or sale).

So if you have this problem, you can sign up for this side challenge. At the end of the year, hopefully, you will have all created 52 new polished masterpieces without lifting your camera.

"Archive Photo a Week - Go through your photo archive, and find a photo that you have not yet processed, and process it! Turn that diamond in the rough into a gem that you can post here for comment, as well as print or resell. Note: you may post a copy of your unpolished photo at the start of your week, and get some advice--then post the polished one!)"

Since it would be nice if people commented on others photos as well as posting, we should limit the number of people participating to a reasonable number. We'll see how many signups we get, but I'm thinking we might try to keep it to 30 or fewer members. As per the usual procedure, I'll start a separate posting thread after we finalize the roster. Then we can begin!

Hmmm... Problem with this is I don't think I have a whole lot of gems hiding anywhere. Maybe if I had someone else's archives to go through? :-)

'Tis a very good idea, though. I'll think about it. (She says, as she's going through the 2008 archives trying to see if there's anything worth polishing for a solid 5.7 in the "Best of"...)

So, I should get organized???
01/02/2009 01:57:03 PM · #4
I have the same problem that Deb has, probably not that many unpolished gems in my entire collection. I tend to look through all my photos soon after I take them and cull out the worst immediately and process the best. All that's left is the mediocre, and there are a ton of those.

Great idea!!!

I was just going through some old stuff looking for a print my wife wanted and thought about how I've a ton of photos I take, but never do anything with.

Count me in!

You know, the more I think about it, the more I like this idea. But can there be a bit of a twist? For those of us not as accomplished as the OP, perhaps we can post a shot at the beginning of the week that we've found, that we'd really like to do something nice with, and get suggestions and helpful hints as to how to achieve our goals? I realize that might be too time intensive, and that not everyone needs help. But perhaps the mediocre among us have more gems than we realize, if we just had a bit of help in polishing them.

I think that's an excellent addition to the process. Optional, of course!

I've got two hard drives full of photos that I haven't taken a look at. Sign me up as well, this sounds like a great way for me to clean up some files.

I like this idea. I will try.

Great idea! Count me in. And I really like Deb's idea of getting suggestions from others on how they'd process a particular image :-)

Me too please! Sounds like fun!

Sounds good. Put me on the list. I like the idea of getting pre-PP advice. Should be a good learning experience for all.

I do the same, however, I find that a few months later, I am approaching them with a fresh eye and new editing skills that I previously lacked.

I've got loads of dross saved...just in case.

I might be able to find a few.

Okay, count me in, but I warn you all, some are pretty dire and need major surgery rather than PP.

I will also join, it will help me get rid of the crap that is no good and clogging up the hd space.

This is a good idea I need to get organised and go through my images and sort them out as has been previously stated by others Im not sure if I have gems but I'll see what I can do....so sign me up! Having said that I am going away for a week tomorrow! So I wont be there for the first week!
01/02/2009 05:20:26 PM · #18
Yeah, this is exactly what I *should* be doing, but probably won't get around to, at least on any regular basis. I know I have some folders where I have potential stock or print images to process -- it might be possible if I could post in batches batches rather than weekly.

How old do the pictures have to be to qualify?
01/02/2009 05:21:33 PM · #19
I can do that. Stock preparation! With 222,000 actuations over 4 cameras, some more culling should certainly also occur. :D

My home shoot archive folders are all sequentially numbered, maybe my own side project will be to take one a week. (I'm up to #339) Of course that might be boring for others, since it's mostly horses, cats and longhorn cattle. Probably too linear, after all, discovery is what will make the heart beat faster!

No real rules, but since the "goal" is one a week, it would be best to start with the oldest files in your archive and work your way forward!
01/02/2009 05:49:15 PM · #21
Neil, do you want to know the camera used?? perhaps would be interesting to compare older models with newer ones??
01/02/2009 05:51:41 PM · #22
I'd like to join.
01/02/2009 06:01:31 PM · #23
I'd like to join in here. Like most people I have stacks of photos that were never going to fit the challenges, and this seems an ideal way to give them their due.
What sort of editing is being contemplated?

My "archives" on this machine alone go back to January, 2003 :-( ... what's the latest "set-aside" images you think it's reasonable to consider? November? 2007?

FWIW I am not looking to cull any photos, but only to process those I meant to finish "someday" but never got back to.

Brilliant idea. I'm in.
