day 5
01/05/2009 08:37:00 AM · #153
I'm out til next weekend. Don't wanna post pics of my morning toast and coffee just to keep up pace.

I'm not sure if I'm succeeding but trying to find things which are enhanced by the LB or where using the effect has some meaning to me, isn't easy. I have the dogs hugging image (posted) for example, where I wish I'd had a different lens on the camera but we try...right? I don't think the LB does anything positive for the shot...nothing negative either but the doggies are cool.

I'll try to catch up with some comments - Cheers!

Ooops. It's very early. I posted the shot twice. Sorry.

I'm a little surprised at this; I'd have thought LB was a natural for food photography, and in your position I'd be eager to try it out as often as I could on that...

I was speaking of loftier pursuits...more artsy, If that makes sense?

The LB 2.0 is a bitch to use, especially keeping the sweet spot focused on the exact point of food you choose, where precision is super crucial. I tried some food shots way back with it but had a miserable time. If I was shooting stock and could make some decent money, I might spend the time but not too sure how popular the shots would be. For general product stock, I've seen some wonderful stuff and after studying a few hundred images, learned there's a little more play in terms of focus and required light, where food is a little more tricky (in general).

Maybe I'll give it another whirl, while I'm in a zone but again, I like using the LB to get in touch with my inner art child. It's fun and it get's me looking differently. I like that it also plays as an exercise to my other shooting, in that I take a good deal away from a day or two with the ole LB glued onto my camera.

Ah, but it does really cool things with the graffiti monster!

On a funny note; When I saw the dogs playing, I thought what a kick it would be to blur a Sha Pei. I ultimately lost my courage and hit them with the sweet spot.

As far as I'm concerned, food photography IS (or at least can be) "art", and from my perspective there are few loftier pursuits than feeding both the body and the spirit...

Ah, that's the problem... What you need is the 3G (or the Control Freak, or maybe even the Composer); these all allow you to set your tilt and lock it, then fine-tune focus in a more or less conventional manner with a rotating ring, though int he case of the 3G the range of focus adjustment is limited so you have to be close to what you wanted when you lock.

Lensbaby developed the 3G specifically to address their user's concerns about stock photos and repeatability - you might want to try the 3G or Control Freak, as it's known now.

Fair enough.

As for the buying a 3G...oddly, I like the struggle you get with the 2.0. It's the key to that "box of chocolates" equation. It was a thought but I recently hemouraged money on an 85 1.4 so new aquisitions are on hold.

If you get up this way again, bring the LB and we can swap for a few months. I wouldn't mind messing with the 2.0 for a while, and the 3G is perfect for tripod work like food shots tend to be, or even hand/held where you can dial in the tilt and lock it, then move around making slight focus adjustments on the wheel as you recompose.

If anyone has a good B&W technique they are willing to share, please let me know. I'm open to ideas.

I saw this somewhere, promoted as the magical, never-fails B&W conversion:

Channel Mixer>Monochrome> R30, G59, B11.

My though was, "yeah, right!" But it does seem to work well, nearly all the time.

Thanks Paul. I'll have to play around with those settings.

@ marc923, try the platinum action from www.atncentral.com, it gives a nice tone.

Btw, I'm just about to hop in this thread...

Hop in gently - it's hard enough to focus my LB 2.0.

Yeah I know, but the focus is NOT what we need... :-)

I saw a Wolf tied to a Barber Shop Pole on my way home from school.
