Ok...half way...
But i don't know if i'm going to continue with my comments..i'm starting to feel guilty or insecure about beeing a newcomer and comment all the photos...Ok..i'm beeing dramatic..but sometimes my comments can be wrong, if that exists.

I would agree...your comment to me was a little harsh. Maybe before leaving a comment, look at the person's profile to see if they are new or not. This was only my first submission. And what is oof?

Then why are you here?

I don't appreciate your negativity toward the voters (of which I am one). If your entry isn't scoring as well as you'd like, it's your own fault, not the voters'. I mean come on, people. This is Bokeh V. If you haven't figured out by now that what bokeh actually means has no relevance to your score, then bitching about it after the fact isn't going to help. We're playing a game here. Just like any other game you have to know what it takes to win. If you want a high score, give the voters what they want. Again, if they're too stupid to know the real definition of bokeh (according to you), then give them a photo with their definition of bokeh. Better yet, give them a photo with everyone's definition of bokeh all at once!

Give them something pretty...... or a water drop!

oof= Out of focus. (as opposed to having the subject crisp and in focus and the background and or foreground oof which demonstrates bokeh IF it compliments and makes the main subject more dramatic)

Point to be made here, I believe, is that we don't know who's entry is what. We can't tell from your photo who you are so we don't know if you are new or old. :)

Either way, if you are getting a comment at all, be appreciative of it. Folks are just voicing an opinion and taking time out of their day to do it to try and help you get better. I'll just tell ya, if you don't learn to see a positive in every comment, even if it is "this is crap" (which I got on my very first entry here LOL), you will quickly become very frustrated with this site. There is a lot to learn here. So take the comment, try to see why they said what they said, and gain something. Only through that will you get better and less frustrated in the long run. :)

I know how it feels to put your very first entry out there and have someone say something you don't like about it. We were all new once. But you gotta take it with a grain of salt and move forward to greatness :)

My 0.02 :)

Hey Sarah...i'm really sorry if i was rude, when i feel like i was i apologize to the person in the comment. Everybody receive a tough comment once in a while, but i'm really sorry if i was rude. I'll try to review my comments as much as possible.
OOF means out of focus.

Lol I thought it was pretty and the OOF on foreground and BG are pretty obvious...guess maybe because it is OOF on objects on a solid bg instead of haveing a pattrened BG that is oof..oh well....on to shadows

Give them something pretty...... or a water drop!

That's why I am iffy on leaving critiques in comments. I know it's necessary and very helpful, but I'm always worried that it may come across as sounding hateful.

When I first joined here, some of the acronyms threw me: my first time seeing "oof" and I though it was a vocalization (woof!), like "oof, that's good" or "oof, that's bad" or "dude, this image so oof!"

It sounds like a language almost: ISO DOF OOF ASA TTL DNMC!

A few really outstanding images in this challenge - but overall I was quite disappointed in the entries - too many big gaudy circles of light for my taste...average vote given 5.3 - well below my usual voting average

To all those beginners here who think that the comments are too harsh, I went for a full year before finally getting a 5 score. Of course, I had just started doing photography at the age of 60.

Sure I was pissed off sometimes, but when I saw the winning entries I knew my entries were crap. It is humbling to see a someone 40 years younger than you getting fabuluous marks.

After a year I was getting better and got some low 5's, but only with the subjects I liked taking photos of. I finally quit entering photos in early 2007, but I ran into scarbrd while in the fireld and he told me the contest was Birds II, so I sent in an entry and got my best mark ever, 6.89. What a trip! Placed 12/249.

I have been back on board since. Usually just Best of month, but sometimes some others like Bokeh V.

So just keep learning and trying. The competition here is intense and any photo in top 50% is a good photo! I've only managed it 3x.

Excellent advice. Keep a thick skin. Anything over a 5 is good and if you hit a 5 1/2 that's damn good. It's hard to please everybody and that's what it takes to come in at the top of a challenge. Learn from it, but don't take the score too much to heart. (I need to take some of that advice myself sometimes!)

Added: Even an entry that scores a 4 on this site is a better shot than most people's vacation snaps.

For sure! This is some creamy smooth eye pleasing BoKeh. Great subject and fantastic composition.

This = Bokeh

While that is a cool shot I find the Bokeh to be quite boring, there is nothing there to draw you in(in the background I mean), its as if there was an orange paper hanging there, I think great bokeh would have had some detail there, some hint of structure to help draw you in. Just my 2 cents.

This shot on the other hand has an intrgiguing background which I would posit is a much more interesting Bokeh shot than the other.

I agree with Jason, this is a fantastic shot, beautiful bokeh (and not a circle of light to be seen!!) ;)

Great shot David
