<4 means you get unlimited pizza & beer and your own honorary rock named after you
4-5 means you get 1 Large stuffed crust of your choice and 3 cans of beer, you share a rock with 1 other person
5-6 gets a Medium pizza, 1 beer and has a rock to lean against
6+ and you're ouuta here!! ;)

By the way, if you start in 1 category and cross to another, you only get the 'rewards' of the category you were in to start with...

Enjoy... :D

Only a 1-beer score, huh? Is that per day or do I have to make it stretch over the entire week? If the score drops does the beer bottle ... wait, no one specified the size of the one beer, did they? ;-) If it's big enough no magic replenishment will be required! I will have to set it down in a chilly spot when not actually drinking so it doesn't get too warm. I don't care for warm beer.

To anybody who has voted in the last hour and given out a 1, please go back and leave a comment why!

What is it with some people? If you don't understand photography don't vote on a photography site. If you do understand the art, please have the decency to leave a comment so I can learn from your awesome knowledge and experience because I'm obviously doing it all wrong. What was it you didn't like? The Bokeh? The focus? The exposure? The composition?

How the hell am I going to improve without the benefit of your expertise?

Edited to allow increased outrage to be adequately expressed.

Hey, relax mikeee, it aint the end of the world... there's always a few muppets voting! I got 2 10's for my last competition entry! Even though it obviously wasnt a superstar photo (more like a rushed together pile of tat...) I also got a few 1's... Im convinced some people just go thru clicking the lowest or highest they can!!
12/18/2008 08:24:01 AM · #155
I agree, it's not the end of the world and I am relaxed. I just can't understand the mentality of the idiots who behave like this. I think it would be better if it was obvious who gave what score, as that would stop these idiots voting anonymously.

I do not concentrate on scores. I concentrate on comments. I appreciate anybody that takes the time to make a comment. Most of them are valid and I can learn a lot (which is what I am here for). Some comments are obviously rubbish, but I ignore them. I recently received a very low score for one of my favourite photos of all time. Some people saw what I intended and scored 10. Most people obviously did not and hence the low overall score. I was not dicouraged by the low score, I was encouraged by the positive comments.

I think scoring is really a fun part of this site and you should not let your ego get the better of you. Your score is really of no consequence in the greater scheme of the universe!
12/18/2008 08:38:41 AM · #157
Aye, indeed! I agree completely, I benefit much more from comments than from scores... Thats one of the reasons I'm also a bit peeved cos no-ones commented on my current shot yet! Comments that just say 'nice shot' or 'good' i also find annoying sometimes. It would be nice if they said what they thought was good, or how it could be made 'great'!

I agree with both of you, which is why I asked people who vote 1 to give me their (obviously expert) guidance on how I can improve to their standards.

My ego isn't getting the better of me, I'm just confused why people can go to the effort of voting so low and not even give me a couple of words why. Surely that's part of this site's ethos?

It's the constant frustration of the way a such a thing is run. Most people have a roughly similar scale, but there are enough people with different criteria that even the good entries will usually get some very low votes. Rarely will you get an explanatory comment. I think most people who vote like that do not participate in the forums and have not clue how frustrating they are to the rest of us. Either that, or they know it perfectly well, and that is how they have some fun.

One of my pet theories is that most of us vote on a scale of bad<--->good but some people vote on a scale of don't like <--->like. Using the latter scale, even a top notch entry can be given a 1 simply because it does not appeal to the viewers preferences.

Hope that is of some aid in understanding.

Let's be honest - to go through 200 photos and write a comment for each one aint gonna happen. To look at each one in depth and give a "correct" score probably aint gonna happen either. Voting is subjective. I sometimes see a photo where I really do not like the subject matter and then I do not vote on it. It is subjective and I admit it, but so is all of the voting. I have placed a really emotional photo once and received wild comments on both side of the spectrum.

It is like ordering pizza! Some like peperoni and some like ham. So what? What can you learn?

One thing I will say for the score though - it does help you to judge what people like and what they do not like. It might be important for those who want to get into stock photography or want to sell their photos. Kind of - find out what the customer wants.

One thing I have learnt - if it does not draw attention as a thumbnail, the composition probably won't work. And that is important as people who want to buy photos page through hundreds of thumbnails at a time and will only look at the ones that attract them.

I don't know if it is just me. I find the challenge to be full of cliche shots. Many of them have no photographic merit. Its like some one taking a shot to show what exactly is a bokeh to a person ignorant of that.
Atleast it doesn't hurt the eye like the last sunset-sunrise challenge which was full of over saturated photos ;)

Woah there... :)

Sometimes folks vote first and comment later. I like to do this sometimes too so I have more time with the shots I feel could use the most critique and the better/best shots I don't have to worry with because I know they will be commented on by others. So, before you blow an artery, give us some time. :)

I sugest a new topic for that...since it's a great subject!
I was thinking here, maybe a theme like Bokeh shouldn't be a Exclusive Open Challenge...i'm not a member and i had to study to understand what is bokeh, and i don't know if i'm wright yet! Maybe some voters didn't try to study what is bokeh before voting, which i think is really wrong.

As for the lack of comments, a lot of that is due to people getting flamed and nasty comments emailed to them when they state their honest reason why they voted a photo less than a 3. That is the dpc guideline, if you vote 3 or less you are supposed to leave a comment no matter what. Personally I see both sides of the problem. If you leave a vote of 3 or less and leave a comment of "this sucks" you are not being constructive and I do not blame the person that got the comment from pm'ing he person and asking wtf. However when you leave a constructive comment and get flamed or a nasty pm in return, it discourages you from commenting again.

I have suggested many times to the "powers that be" that during the voting phase ALL commenters should automatically be "bag heads" until after the voting is over. That way there are no possibilities of angry exchanges until after voting, and usually folks are calmed down by then. (but it is like talking to the rock everyone is sitting under...)

We've phoned in the order. It's waiting for pickup at Ray's pizza in N.Y. Would you pick it up on your way to the rock and save us the delivery charge?
