I feel like this always seems to happen, I take a photo, I enter it into a challenge and this its ok, but I dont think it will do well, but heck we'll just wait and see...
then I take a shot, and I think its great... and it tanks!

Is it me or does this happen to us all?

You mean, like on weds you enter what you think is an OK shot, then on fri you get what you think's a winner, and replace the weds shot, only to have the Friday shot crater on you?

Or you mean like you enter a so-so shot one week and scores better than you expect, then the next week you enter (what you think is) a great shot and watch it tunnel straight to hell?

If the latter, yeah it happens to me all the time.

Oh its not just you... ok well maybe it is just you and me...lol I have taken shots like 30 mins before the challenge deadline just to get something in and get the best scores I have ever gotten, but then ones I spent hours setting up or doing and redoing, and got just crap scores. So I really feel it is a to each their own on here, and some favorites. But you'll have that I just use this for a good place for learning and giving me a idea to focus on each week.

Happy Shoooting and God Bless,

~D~

I will probably get hammered on this, but my shots are being scored the same way. I have noticed this in the last 12 weeks. I do not know if side challenges are the cause. It will be interesting to see how scores change now that a major side challenge is finished. If everyone's scores that have been on the rollercoaster start to level out, then I think we can come to some conclusion. I think side challenges may hurt more than they help.

I always thought my ability to judge my own photos would work like my ability to judge my a golf swing or my bridge game. Not at all true. There are no real absolute measurements in something subjective like art. You can get the techncials right but the elusive "wow factor" or "emotional response" is much harder to know whether you have achieved or not.

It's not just you, my two highest rated photos are ones I really do not care that much for but went well with the voters. Some of the shots I like have been low sixes but have not faired as well.

Happens. Once I figure it out I'll be there.

Is it fair to say that photography is not dissimilar to art, in it being subjective?

Personally I'm glad voting happens that way. This isn't supposed to be science, it's supposed to be art. Art is subjective and affects different people in different ways.

If you figure out a formula that will win you a high score every single time, then consider yourself the Backstreet Boys of photography.

I think I'm starting to shoot more 'DPC friendly' stuff, and I'm not entirely happy about it.

I want more 10's, but at the same time, I want more 1's. I WANT people to react strongly, regardless of what that emotion is.

Yes, photography can be subjective but it's important to note that the challenges are not setup to award the best photo only the most popular photo so it stands to reason that the better photos might not do as well since what makes a great photo has nothing to do with mass appeal.

Don't take the votes too seriously, it's just a bit of fun.

What annoys me is a low score and the voter not letting me know what (s)he didn't like about it so I can improve. A score on its own is irrelevant.

This is HILARIOUS!!!

And remember, though the Backstreet Boys were hugely successful, calling them artists of music is, well.......8>)

Yeah, what he said!

That also means that one can console oneself for all of the crappy scores by thinking, "I'm just SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO misunderstood!"

Accompany that with a head toss and a heavy sigh, and you've got it!

LOL!!!

I've had some quick snapshots from the side of the road score better than some other stuff that I thought was some of my best. I'm caring about what the comments say more than the scores lately.

All the time and I don't enter much..... It is what it is..... as long as you like your images and I like mine it's not that critical that we like each others..... Then as a regular <50th percentile finisher maybe that just my justification :-)

So a head toss and heavy sigh translates into "You dumb SOBs!!! Don't you know a great photograph when you see one???"

Exactly. What do those Philistine voters know, anyway...
