This past saturday I used my debit card to purchase $113 of merchandise and it has never posted to my account as pending or otherwise. Does anybody know what I should do about it if anything? Everything I have used the card for before or after has already posted.

Walmart/Sams purchases seem to have a lag sometimes. I bought gas at Sams that seemed to appear a few days later rather than day of. It does show up eventually.

Here at our local walmart the transaction shows up quickly along with most other stores. I can come home and look online and see where it has been taken out of my account balance and pending. But within 24-48 hours if not paid it will drop off the system and not show back up till the transaction is completed (paid). So a lot of the time with your debit card you may not see the transaction and the funds have been re-applied to your account.

Usually you can call your bank and ask them what is pending payment and they will be able to tell you even though it may not be showing up on you online banking or automated phone banking.

Hope that helps.

That's the way my business banking account does, and it drives me crazy. My credit union account posts immediately.

ditto...
it sometimes depends on when they z-out the machines too...
just don't make the mistake of thinking that it is available money, as you will then be surprised when it does hit the account.

Some places charge your card as a credit card no matter whether it is credit or debit. So, it may be possible that this occurred or that you accidently charged it as a credit card. In which case, it would take longer than normal for the amount to be withdrawn from your account.

I know some places, such as the Starbucks that I usually go to do this...

You could use the amazing accounting method I used to employ while I was in college. I will look at my receipt on my ATM receipt, and make a checkbook entry that says, "The bank says I have THIS much!"

Needless to say, once I got married, my wife decided it was in our best fiduciary interest if she took charge of the money.

another tip is that if you enter your PIN then it comes out imediately if not it can take up to a week

He is correct. If you enter your PIN, then it is processed as a debit transaction and comes out immediately. If you do not enter your PIN, then it gets processed through Visa or Mastercard and will take a few days to hit your account. Many small businesses prefer the debit transactions, as they pay less in transcation fees for that method.

I tried to "help out" a local business man by doing that when I bought gas the other day. A bit later, my husband called and asked why I had spent $75 at that particular gas station. When you do it as a debit, it "holds" $75 until the transaction is actually completed and then it dropped down to the $13 or so I had actually spent. Next time, I do it without the PIN. At our credit union (in contrast to the annoying bank I referenced above), it shows immediately, anyway.

$75? Damn! The local gas stations around here only "hold" a dollar!

Another suggestion and this is what I have been doing for over a year is use quicken or something similar. I use quicken and every night I enter any transactions done during that day. Every morning I check my online backing then I clear what has paid. Do not sort by date, sort by cleared transactions and the balance that is out beside your last cleared transaction should be to the penny what your online bank or phone banking balance says. If it differs then subtract the larger number from the smaller number and it will give you a sum. That sum should equal one or more transactions and that is what has been placed back in your bank because it had not paid with the window of 24-48 hours and you now know to subtract that sum from your balance until the transaction(s) clear.

As far as using your debit card by pin. What others have said is true, it does take the funds out immediately and make it easier for you to track. However I never use this feature because stores, processing mechants, and some banks are now charging a fee for entering your pin (debit purchase). It has not happened to me but you can google and see several news articles where consumers were hit with a $1 or more in fees every time they used their pin. I don't know how many people this could effect of if it would effect me but I prefer using the credit method to avoid such problems.

Good point. This did cause me a problem, but only once. It is done at gas stations because they have to approve the transaction before knowing how much you are spending. A sam's club had a glitch in their system (they blamed it on a third party) and the $75 hold did not get released. They gave it back to me, plus the overdraft fee I incurred at my bank because of it.

Hotels will also put a hold on debit card funds, and the clerks will tell you they have to do this. (They really don't, if you hold your ground with them) They will also tell you (incorrectly) that nothing will be processed or taken from your account. What they have been told is only true if it is a credit card. What I always do if offer to give them a modest amount of cash if they must have a deposit for room services that I probably won't use.

I did use my pin and normally it shows as a pending payment immediately even at wal-mart... still nothing showing tonight. I'll let it ride a week or so I guess but then I think I'll have to do something about it if it hasn't come out by then. Thanks everyone.
