So I had someone express interest in getting some of my work printed as a poster. My first advice was to have them just take the digital image somewhere professional....after that....is there anything I'd need to do to the photo before hand? Does anyone have a favorite place online for getting stuff printed? I finally broke down and bought a photo printer, so I never actually got around to trying online places out. Thanks.

By "printed" do you mean one (or several) photographic enlargements, or hundreds/thousands of copies printed by traditional offset or digital press methods?
You best bet is to get specifications directly from the facility where the actual printing takes place.

| Sorry, I should have clarified, printed as a poster (as in just one or two). Since the person is in a different town and I am not familiar with the printers local to there I was just trying to make sure I'm not messing up something simple. |

for all my 4x6 prints I only use //www.snapfish.com I love them because you can get a bunch of free prints plus coupon codes you find on the net help out....
For my enlargements (posters) I used //www.elcocolor.com/poster_special.htm or //www.jumbogiant.com for my panoramas and then I can have them shipped to me or whom ever
if its something small like an 8x10 or just something I need fast I i use //www.adoramapix.com because I can just walk their and pick them up but they also do shipping
all above are great never had a problem

| I would set up a Photoshop (or whatever) file at the desired output size at 300dpi, then place/import your image and adjust as desired. I usually put a moderate border and a title on mine, enough to bring them up to a standard print size without cropping. If someone chooses to frame it with a mat, they can easily cover the type if desired -- see (almost all of) my photos at my DPC Prints gallery for examples. |
