I know this sounds sooooooo immoral, but here is how I think the world works in this case.

Putting your work out there always puts it at risk of getting ripped off. I doubt there is a way that you can fully protect your images outside of watermarking the crap out of them.

The same goes for software programs like Photoshop, its going to happen. If that person gets caught stealing my images, there are ways of getting money and compensation for it (if they are caught), the same goes for software.

What I have experienced in my short duration on this Earth is that people are immoral by nature at some extent. Some wont steal because its immoral but I think most dont steal because they arent desperate enough for that item to steal. If they were desperate enough, they would steal it.
I think the chance and risk of getting caught also is taken into consideration in how likely that person will steal...

Im not saying its right and Im not saying this is how everyone is, but its a trend I have noticed in humanity. What can I get away with, assessing the risk, to fit my needs.

I think you can even qualify for the educational pricing if you take continuing education classes. So sign up for a Photoshop course and then buy the software. :) Maybe I oughta go that route myself?

all you need is a .edu email address. this works for all kinds of software, i got two copies on win7 pro for $30 each, through Microsoft becuase i take classes at two different schools, i can also get office 2010 for $69.

i found cs5 for $199 through one site. i haven't tried going through adobe or through my school bookstore site.

To get my student licence I had to send through a copy of my acceptance letter or a copy of a photograph student ID card (I didn't buy direct from adobe). The course I am on is just one evening a week so the cost of the course + the cost of photoshop is still much lower than buying a non student version of photoshop!! And I can use it after the course and I can use it commercially and I can upgrade through the normal upgrade paths.

yeah it appears i was a little off base. adobe requires proof of enrollment. Microsoft only required an email address.

//www.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?event=displayEduConditions&store=OLS-EDU&nr=1

here is a list of software you can buy through them.

adobe elements only $69, that should no most of what amateurs need anyways... i have been using elements 2.0 for years, but it doesn't work with win7 or vista so i need to upgrade.

I've installed Elements v7 on Vista and Win7 and it works fine.

I have Photoshop 7. Unfortunately, Windows 7 doesn't seem to like Photoshop 7 and it freezes up a lot. But, being as I'm going back to school this fall, I can't afford to buy a newer version of Photoshop anytime soon.

I got into Photoshop back in the Photoshop 4.0 days. I did it fairly inexpensively by finding an older version for sale on the internet (I think I got it through Ebay if I am remembering correctly). Then I was in the upgrade cycle. Upgrades are always cheaper to buy than full versions. Hope this helps.

According to pricegrabber there are places you can get CS4 for under $400. I know that's still a lot of money, but some of us spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on our cameras/lenses/flashes/etc. Isn't Photoshop an essential part of your camera?
