It's not a monopoly. There is lots of competition, though they have trouble making Adobe sweat. The Adobe products have become a defacto standard and expected tool of pros. Many people need to use it to have compatibility with all the others.

Adobe also seems to be defacto for vector design (Illustrator). I fear I might get roped into buying Illustrator too, as I'm more often being asked to do complete designs which it's a pain in the neck to do with Photoshop alone. :-(

I just purchased the student Extended CS4 version for about $198. I actually had a hard time getting info to Adobe so I ended up buying the student version from Amazon.com:

//www.amazon.com/Adobe-Photoshop-Extended-CS4-Student/dp/B001HBJ65Q/ref=br_lf_m_1000329261_1_2_ttl?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=software&pf_rd_p=467274471&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000329261&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=01NKVEVCT7HKW3B2B2KT

When you get the software, the box will contain VERY easy to follow instructions on getting your proof to them (I had to send my student ID and proof of registration since my ID didn't have an ending date on it and it was a year & 1/2 old).

It is completely the full version... savings of like $800. It's almost worth enrolling in college & taking a few courses just to get the student ID and registration.

I got the same discounts on the strength of being a teacher. Actually, any member of the staff of an educational institution is elligible (I'm not claiming to have read all the fine print here), so that would presumably include janitor and canteen staff...

Another way is too purchase an older version from a reseller, and upgrade as needed. I don't know this company, just the first on google, but I think they buy from corporate or business sellers. I bought photoshop 7 this way and have upgraded to CS3. As far as I know, it is legal, comes in a new box with a valid registration number.

good luck,

I was going to say sign up for some classes at the local community college or something. Great student prices on that stuff. But I realized, I'm a student and I'm forking over a LOT more than the price of photoshop for my classes. GIMP it is.

I wanted to try out "Krita" the other day, another open source image editor (from the KDE Office suite). Looking at the features list, it seems very promising and beats Gimp on a number of points - yes it has 16-bit depth!

Here it is: //www.koffice.org/krita/

But: The windows binary seems to be missing in action. Has anyone been able to get a hold of it and try it out?

The trick is to find someone who's already a student. A case of beer might be all you need to buy.

Cheating by getting a poor student to buy it for a case of beer? - bah, stop pretending that you are not a pirate and get it from the internets like everyone else!

Well since Adobe gives it away for free on thier site, I got mine there. How I managed to keep it after the 30 days...my secret.

@ OP ...

Come on Lonnie. If you were a guy, which you clearly are not, I'd tell you to just "man-up." Make it a priority to skip your double caramel Vente Machiato Lattes for a couple months. Most smokers spend more in a month on smokes than Photoshop costs. 2 rounds at Pebble Beach cost more than Photoshop. Photoshop costs less than a single good lens. Costs less than an outfit at Ann Taylor ... way less than an outfit at Neiman Markup. Shoot, a drive-by at the makeup counter at Nordstroms will set you back more than Photoshop.

Sure you can get an educational discount. Various discount codes are out there. Be creative. Find somebody that just upgraded to CS4 and hit 'em up for CS3. There must be 50 ways ... But in the end ... just make it a priority.

Obviously I sometimes exaggerate to make a point. Hopefully, no feelings were harmed in the creation of this post. But if you make it a priority, look for opportunities ... you'll find a way.

Which is why I am perfectly happy with CS2 at the moment..

I did try the 30 day trial of CS4 and I certainly enjoyed some of the new features, most notably GPU acceleration, the fact that zoom levels such as 33%, 66% are not all pixellated - ummmm and thats about it. Other features such as content aware scaling were fun to test out, but wouldn't be used enough to justify the upgrade. I still prefer the old photoshop interface as well, cant be doing with all those drop down toolboxes in CS4 (introduced in CS3 I believe). I will probably carry on with CS2 until the newer plugins are not backwards compatible with CS2, but those are all pretty mainstream (Neatimage, Portrait Pro, Photomatix & Topaz). Also, CS2 has a lower memory footprint and seems to run faster - but my system is around 3 years old now so the newer version probably run better on newer hardware.

And CS2, if you can find it, is as cheap as chips these days!!

Nikon Capture NX2 since you have a Nikon camera

Its a little bit clunky (I mean from a technical perspective the screen refresh and menus flicker a bit) but the colour curve editing is just simply out of this world, its non destructive and one can keep adding processing step after processing step.

Just don't use it to upload your photos to your computer if you plan on using them at DPC. There have been issues with Capture NX and EXIF data transfer. Capture NX appears to 'touch' the files on upload.

Haha. I have the whole CS4 master suite, and half the programs I will never ever use.

I guess since I paid $40 for my copy of PaintShop Pro, I am only using about $15 worth. I love finding a bargain!

I also feel like sometimes I'm they only person that doesn't steal the software. I remember I had just forked out $600 for the CS3 suite, when the guy i was seeing just ripped it offline then gave it to my roommates to use also. It was so infuriating, but the program is worth the money!! So just save, or as someone else mentioned use it as a write off for taxes if you've got a business.

But it's non-destructive....how can that be?.....8>)

Seriously, if you shoot in RAW, you never have to worry about being able to produce a usable file for validation.....unless you delete it!

You're not the only one who actually purchased it, and that bugs me too when I pay for something that others pirate.

Correct - but only if you save in RAW. Many people don't shoot in RAW because of the size of the files and their lack of knowledge of the benefits.

What do you mean save in RAW? Do people actually delete their originals?

The size of the files means more info.....how is that bad?????
