The only 10 I gave out in the strength challenge, some great shots but this one was the perfect one for me.

Yes, that was nice. The winners are well deserved, but I don't know why this

finished as far down as it did. (Not my photo...just something I thought would be in the top 10, not 104th!) Congrat's are_62 anyway...nice photo.

You didn't give 10 to the winning image?
Only one 10?

This is the answer I was asking here for a long time "Who is voting here?".
Thanks..

At least no one is DEMANDING an explanation from the low voters (yet). LOL

Just curious pits, are you agreeing or disagreeing with Deanda?
04/21/2004 12:33:53 AM · #6
I gave both images in this thread 8s.
04/21/2004 12:34:26 AM · #7
Of the top three the only one I gave a 10 was the second. I really liked that one.

While "Dad" is a nice photo I felt the message was somewhat conflicted by the age of the subject and didn't quite have the impact that some of the other photos had. Above average but not quite superlative.

That is not the point,if you take the "dad" out is just a perfect headshot portrait which doesn't tell me anything about strength or power !

Y'all don't think "Dad" could get to that age without strength? It shows in his eyes & expression...in every wrinkle (Sorry Dad) on his face...strength of character. I think it's an excellent shot. Muscles aren't the only thing that show strength in a person.

And for the record I neither entered nor voted in this challenge...just tellin ya what I see ;)

It looks like for 7 trolls was threatning and slammed it with 1's or 2's !

Pitsaman there are always trolls who don't have the intellect put 2 + 2 together, or to see that a turtle's shell gives it "strength", and give a good image like this a 1 or 2. Instead those 7 people would need to see the image of a "pro wrestler" slamming another wrestler onto the floor to ever give an image a "10". :)

You kind of answered my question. You don't agree with Deanda that this shot shows strength or that it deserves a 10 in this challenge. I'm personally am not sure that it deserves a 10, but in many cultures, (not as much in ours as it should) age is a by product of strength. You don't get to be old by being weak...

Thanks Deannda, I enjoyed all comments I received on it, yours including… I will print this portrait with the comments for my dad’s birthday in June. Irina.

Since I didn't have an entry, I'm not sure why this matters, but, votes from me were:

Turtle: 7
Dad: 10

Dad's photo is awesome, don't get me wrong ,but there are many more photos which deserved 10 score !
And many other photos which got ones with no reason!

12 ones and two's ???

Personally, that's a wonderful portrait, and I scored it well, but I don't understand how people expect everyone to identify with the use of religious symbols, especially when they are from a "single" religion.

Glad to see that you're up in arms that the fact that this photo got 28 threes, 10 twos, and 3 ones.

nshapiro: It is not clear to me that your assumption that everyone who uses religious symbols "expect everyone (else) to identify with the use of religious symbols", is correct.

My guess is that most people who use religious symbols feel moved by what they post and hope to share, and are likely not very concerned about a ribbon.

Librodo almost always gets a high score from me becuase his stuff is very, very, good, and this was no exception. I had a similar idea, but no time, and no where near the talent. I settled for giving him a 10.

Thanks a lot Bill for the kind words. When I took this shot...

I don't have any thoughts about how the non-Catholics will take it. It was the Easter week then and I probably was carried away by my religious fervor and also after watching "The Passion of Christ". This shot is my personal favorite (better than my Red ribbon winner, IMHO). Even if I didn't get a ribbon for it, I will do this concept again if faced with a similar theme and circumstances (like the avilability of this beautiful and willing model). Sorry if I have ruffled some spiritual feathers.

The eight 1's and the four 2's, I guess, were rightfully deserved by me. If it did create such an impact on people, they are bound to rate it on the extreme. Actually, this is the first shot that I've entered that awarded me the most 1's. No regret. I am enjoying my sixth place (and my sixth top 10 finishes).

BILL: your talent is in the offing. You have a lot of depth in your pictures and that's the start of it.

PITSAMAN: thanks for your kind words too. Frankly, I never thought about my eight 1's until you pointed it out. I am learning my lessons.

Thank you very much for making me a part of this discussion. I'll stay tune.

Nope, gave the winning image a 7, might have bumped to an 8 if I had time to go back through.

And I am voting here as well as many others who have different preceptions, ideas and images of what the challenge means, that is part of what makes this site work so well.

I would have given the 2nd place image an 8 if I had gotten that far in the voting and the third place image a 7. While they all depicted strength to one degree or another the only one that could have stood on it's own and conveyed that message without a title was possibly the 2nd place one.

But for me personally, while looking through the thumbnails the "Dad" one jumped out at me immediately and imagine my joy when I clicked on it and it looked even better (sometimes the thumbnails look better than the actual shot). To me a Dad or a Mom are the ultimate definitions of strength in a family and society. And that Dad looks like he earned every single one of those grey hairs and wrinkles by being the rock of the family.

The problem is that many people who don't subscribe to a religion often view it as a weakness and a crutch. To me, that image, while photographically wonderful, doesn't really portray strength. I see more of a vulnerable and scared person. I don't know if that is based on my personal convictions or if she really looks vulnerable. That being said, I don't understand giving a 1 or a 2 to an entry because you disagree with their interpretation of the theme. Ignoring the theme all together is a different issue, but this is a matter of interpretation.

EDIT: Having looked at the photo again, I think it the fact that her face is hiding behind the head covering that hightens the impression of vulnerability. Maybe if she was more open it would show more strenght. Basically, give a "Hear I am, you can't hurt me" expression.

I would tend to agree with Trinch here. The image although wonderful came across as scared, meek, and vulnerable.

I don't think people are trying to judge if a photo met the challenge in the eyes of the photographer rather I think they vote on if the photo met the challenge in their own eyes. So combining the two ideas about religion being viewed as weakness and the scared and vulnerable look it would appear that people voted low because they thought it didn't meet the challenge.

In general I don't find religious symbols to be "strong" unless they are framed in a way to convey that. A cross set against a cloudless sky doesn't say much to me, though it may be a wonderful photo. If the cross is rugged and weatherbeaten but enduring in an otherwise abandoned cemetery, that says something else that transcends anything that I bring to the table from my religious (or non-religious) background. I found librodo's portrait to be an exception and scored it accordingly because it was a strong photo and conveyed the idea to me that this subject finds strength through prayer.

I scored the Dad photo very high as well. It was a good portrait for reasons of simple composition and style but also for the subject matter portrayed. I don't think I would have even needed the title for it to work for me - the man's weathered face and serenity spoke to me.

I agree with Deannda, should have been in the top 10, in my opinion, but then again we go back to the "the image is great because it speaks to me. So Deannda is correct and so is Pitsaman for not liking the image. I think we all rate the photos based on what we value and perceive - culture, life experiences, etc. Since we're from very different walks of life, there are bound to be extreme opposite opinion.

I wish I could read through posts without someone jumping down another person's throat for stating their opinion. One reason I stopped posting and participating months ago - I just don't seem to get a friendly vibe from these forums anymore, which is unfortunate because I can/have learn(ed) much from the fantastic photographers here.
