I really thought my image was going to do better than it did in the smoke challenge. 30th place just does not seem fitting for the amount of comments and 4 favorites on the image. Was the lack of a lot of smoke that distracting?

I don't like all the extra space on the right, would have cropped just off the knee.

But otherwise I like the photo completely. Didn't vote in smoke, but it would have received a 6 or 7.

Thank you for your reply. Is that all you would have changed? Would you have added more lighting anywhere? Of course I probably should have lit a couple hundred more insense cone or something, but the portrait itself, do you think the lighting is ok?

I read the comments and the looked at the images in the challenge. i think people expected the smoke to be a main subject for the shot and hence your score suffered for it. I personally like the shot very much, think it is one of the better and more interesting photos in the challenge but I think the fact that the smoke is a minor component and mood setter rather than a subject is clearly what cost you with the voters.

Take the favs the comments and enjoy. The placement of the score, the actual score, and all really won't matter in a week. But having this excellent photo in your portfolio will...

Exactly what Peter already said. Fabulous image.

It is a fab image however to me it's more about the sax player than the smoke. The picture would tell pretty much the same story without the smoke.

I liked this image and gave you a 7 in the voting, I thought it was an interesting take on the challenge but wasnt as smokey as I think the challenge needed. maybe if some smoke had been coming out of the sax it would have met more peoples idea of the challenge? (have no idea if that would work or not, just wild speculation on my part!)
Like Bassbone said, its an excellent picture to be in your portfolio and you should be proud of it!

Thanks, I guess the moral of the story is don't forget the theme of the challenge..... Ya I thought about pushing some cigarrette smoke out of the sax or tossing a thingie down in it but i was afraid it would mess up my pads....

I think your photo would have done a lot better in another challenge.
some people would call this a shoehorn entry as it does not show smoke and they would consider it DNMC. As it is, I think it did very well in the voting.

I like the shot very much, and might even like it better without the smoke as it is now. It seems a little weak to give that "smokey nightclub" feel I suspect you were going for, and its placement, behind the head and just one shoulder, makes it seem almost accidental.

As others have said, it's a good photo, just not strong enough in the smoke element for THIS challenge :)
