This thread has been created from the response to the following thread:

//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=842119

We are creating this group to have a discusion about images that have been already voted on and we will attempt to disect them and discuss the composition, technicals, asthetics and other things that have led to that images score.

The way that we will approach the images, is we as a group will pick a challenge that is currently in voting, I will create a random number generator that I will be able to provide a maximum number of entries to and we will allow it to choose 10 images from that particular challenge. The group will then pick a minimum of 3 of these images and try to evaluate it here in the thread and this will be how we form our discussion of each photo to better understand them. We can also talk about the actual latest challenges in the entry process to make more people understand the "whats expected" from the challenge.

Please let me know if this will work for everyone. This is the best culmination of all the ideas from the last thread that I could come up with. If it does work then please let me know which challenge set we would like to work from, being Friday do we start next tuesday or use the current winners. I suggest the current winners to get it started.

The members of this group is:
Hot_Pixel
eva2k0
rlewis
yospiff
NikonJeb
cpanaioti
salmiakki
smichener
pixelpig
colorcarnival
onesaint
nshapiro
mchalmers
smudgeSMJ
JMart
Melethia
GeneralE
kirbic
stevieian
zeuszen
bergiekat
cryan
bspurgeon
posthumous

Please let me know if I missed you from the origional thread. Also, people who want to follow this thread, I will allow some posts from outside this group, but please be considerate to the photographers photo that we are evaluating and the people within this group.

I'd love to see it start right away. Perhaps just starting with the free challenge would make sense, although doing something like the money challenge would involve a discussion of meeting the challenge.

I wonder, as a matter of etiquette, if PMs should be shot out to the owners of photos being considered for discussion just to make sure they don't mind the attention. The only reason I mention this is that the original idea seems to have been expanded to include photos at various levels and some folks at the middle or lower end of the challenge might not appreciate their shot being the subject of an autopsy. Of course, most DPCers would love such attention I suspect, but I'm not sure everyone would.

I think you missed Ben! Please count bspurgeon in as well from the other thread.

Thanks!

I'm a little wary about taking this part on. Current challenges get discussed ad nauseum already and, while sometimes enlightening, they often tend to devolve into semantic arguments.

Actually, that seems like it might be a good idea solely from JMart's perspective.

A short discussion as to the perceived theme might shed some light on a wide variation in entries.

We don't need really to ascertain much more than whether or not we all feel the same way about the theme or that it seems ambiguous.

I think just discussing the image is enough. The theme doesn't really matter to me here as this isn't a place where compliance with the theme is relevant. JMO.

Two problems:
1) Ascertaining challenge meanings is not as small a job as you're making it sound which is clearly evident in the threads that are already dedicated to such discussions.
2) It would be redundant. There are already threads for that kind of discussion and it seems like a distraction from Hot_Pixel's original idea of discussing the composition, technical, asthetic etc. qualities of the photos.

Besides, if meeting the challenge in a particular way seems particularly appropriate to the discussion of why a particular photo was successful I'm sure that aspect will be discussed. I just have a sense of impending doom if this thread tries to tackle challenge meanings ahead of time along with photo analysis after the fact.

So we will just skip the challenge definition part, other than this does it sound good to you guys? Would you guys like to start with the free study challenge?

Heres how its going to work, I will run the random number generator, get the photos associated with those photos, then ask the photographer for permission to post them into the thread. Once we have permission I will post them into the thread for us to analyse.

Does this make sense to everyone?

If anyone wants to know, this will be the website I use to get the 10 random images from the challenge

//www.random.org/integers/

Here are our random #s for Free Study, I will be contacting them about their use in this forum

Here are your random numbers:

300

I think the Free Study would be a good place to start - this avoids the whole "meeting the challenge" part for the first discussion and focuses on the photograph.

Free study is a good place to start and generating random numbers for the images to discuss is a good idea.

Do you plan to discuss one photo at a time or what? It's going to be kinda hard to read if there's a comment on Photo A, then B, then C, then A ...

BTW: if anyone declines, based on the comments I got, my entry would be a suitable subject for this topic ... ;-)

Agreed. It seems like things are going to get messy quickly unless we do a shot at a time or something.

I also agree :)

A thought - why would you need permission? If someone has submitted a shot to a challenge, is it not already up for discussion? I can see asking for a portfolio shot, for example, but a challenge shot is fair game. It would be nice to point out to them the discussion in case they don't read forums - but no need to ask permission.

I do agree that we need to either discuss them in order, or we need to somehow indicate by thumbnail or number which entry we are discussing at any given time. I'll start looking over those random numbers and think about my input on them.

Well I completely missed this one, being in hospital and all. I'm interested in being a part of it if I am wanted...

Just a thought. Couldn't we use the critique club somehow? a) the images are already randomly assigned. We would just post the image here after critiquing. b) they are asking for feedback.

Just a thought. edit: Apparently it is because I said that twice...

I would be very interested in joining in on this as well - but I just don't have the time to commit to it.

There's a thought....and/or the Reaction Club.

Both are in place and horribly understaffed.
