that's crazy. i can't imagine. the designers definately watched too much 'Mr. Rogers Neighborhood'

The designers would be the government of Mexico. Apparently this can be seen in quite a few cities in Mexico. The houses are just one giant concrete block. The idea was to get rid of the shanty towns and replace them with these, or so a friend told me.
*shrug*
You can see a few others at the website mentioned on the image.

For context, here's a view of older housing :-)
And here's another newer development:
Mexico, as I'm sure many of you are aware, has a SERIOUS need for modern housing for its people, and developments like these are her answer...
And in a nation of relatively few car-owners, you see a LOT of taxicabs:
I love these shots :-) I have spent a lot of time in Mexico, so they bring back memories.

| Man you talk about a tough home owners association, they would be like "no you can not do that, your house would not look like the others" and imagine being a little tipsy and trying to get into the right house. |

It's actually quite normal in a lot of places. When you build a small house on a narrow lot, you completely destroy the front room's usefulness if you mount a front door. Since the long side is usually perpendicular tot he street, that's the sensible place to put the door.
Interestingly, here on Cape Cod NOBODY uses their front doors; you see a lot of older houses where there are no walkways at all to those doors, they haven't been used in many years, and people use the side doors for the daily travels. I'm not sure why...

because the side door attaches to the door yard, and the door yard attaches to the road. the front door attaches to the front yard, and the front yard attaches to the back ;}

I would choose an anonymous lego land house over the self expression of an urban slum in a second. A leak free roof, running water, electricity, possibly a roof to dry laundry can mean a great deal. I don't know about Mexico, but in India the government would periodically bulldoze the slums or squatters settlements and everyone would loose everything.
On the other hand who knows what standard they are built to, or how they will withstand earthquakes and indifferent maintenance. I hope they don't turn into Chicago's Cabrini Green.
