My actual in the wild shot is right about were I figured. One of the comments pointed out what I was worried about. But I liked that part. Soooo....

Aw thanks Sara! :-) Actually it went to 6.5275 last night. I expect it to bob around a bit, as scores always do, before the scrubber goes to work Sunday night.
And definitely is a PB, my current one is 6.1. And I'm sick of it! |

I'd say no to the laundry line because "no other objects should appear in the photograph".
But if I put a foot in it, the foot wouldn't actually appear. It would be covered by the sock. |

but wouldn't a foot or the suggestion of a foot be counted as an object?

But what of part of the foot was visible say through a hole in the toe? Hmmm?

You are absolutely right. BUT, if you shoot in a zoo, you say it is in a zoo, not in the wild. There are photos of 'wildlife' done in studios, I would love the opportunity to do that. But I am not going to take those shots with a forest background and try telling people I was in the woods. I LOVE animals, no matter where they are. I love to photograph any where really. But they are different experiences!
I think next time it would be cool to have a zoo challenge and a wildlife challenge at the same time. It would prove an interesting experiment to see how the overall shots stood up to each other.

Zoo animals are REAL too, but they cannot compete with a wild shot because they generally lack the context of wilderness, and the shots are often constrained by poor lighting, camera-unfriendly fences, artificial structures and animal apathy. If you have access to a decent animal in the wild, then you have little to complain about. If you think even pro photographers shoot their wildlife in the wild, you're only fooling yourself.

Please don't give me a 1 or 2 my score can't handle it. My wildlife shot that was shot in the wild is sitting at a pathetic 4.4. I would love to have your score at this point and time. |

I'm definitely not complaining about my score - I'm well pleased with it. Just all the rest of the fuss. And Doc, nice score. Susan, yours may not be as high as his, but is nicer just the same. :-)

Even if the conditions are different you will find wildlife in both places, and there's nothing to be gained rules-wise by telling people you took a studio shot out in the woods. This was a "wildlife" challenge, not an "in the wild" challenge. There's a good reason most zoos have signs reminding visitors that the animals are wild, and I suspect the clause about living in a natural natural environment is more aimed at preventing photos of stuffed museum exhibits and the like. I would consider a photo of monkeys on a rooftop in India to be their natural environment even though there's nothing natural about it.

Yes it would, but from a practical standpoint how would we prevent someone from entering a zoo shot in a "wild" challenge anyway? We have only the word of the photographers, and we couldn't DQ something like this just because we think it might have been taken at the Bronx Zoo. |

For heaven's sake, does anyone really care that much about where we shot our friggin' wild animals?!? If you got a shot in the real wild then good for you, it's not easy done, so good job; if it was at a zoo, it's still bloomin' wildlife, that's why it's in the zoo behind protective fencing and not in a pet shop or your back garden. Can't we just enjoy the pretty pictures and have done with the bickering over the settings already??

Okay, so it has to be in the wild... and DPCers won't like "ordinary" animals like squirrels and small birds... so hmm... this will be a challenge with about 10 photos in it... and three will be dq'd because they were actually in a safari park. |
