That's it...I am giving any animal that I have ever seen in a zoo a 1. That includes the squirrels that run around outside the cages and the birds that fly overhead. ;-)

If they're the kind of DPC'r that's reading this thread, then they probably read this one (which started the day the Wildlife IV challenge was announced)--> Wildlife 4 and the reaction to a common zoo animal shouldn't come as a surprise to them.

ETA - I'm not saying it's right or wrong (the voting opinions), just that there shouldn't be any "suddenly...reading" moment for the people you mention.

Wow nice score with a zoo animal.... This thread cracks me up, the challenge was Wildlife, don't remeber reading the part about where you had to find them in their natural habitat. To me if you go into a zoo cage with a lion you may just find out it is still wild. Not everyone can go on safari just to get a shot to put in a DPC challenge.

Please! Almost a 7.4 and no comments? Your image must have left the voters speechless, or perhaps their fingers paralyzed with disbelief after they voted! LOL!

Zero comments on a 7.38 with 81 votes? Something smells funny. Indeed, the game is afoot!

Care to share what those unwritten rules and assumptions are?

Here's my take.

There are no "real" natural environments anymore. Whether it's a zoo, a man made garden, a city park, or a nature preserve, all of these environments have been touched by human intervention. Is a shot taken in a wildlife park where the animals are fed and populations controlled any more or less set up than a shot taken in a zoo? To the animal that was born and lived its entire life in a zoo living it what it perceives as its natural environment, that IS its natural environment.

The challenge description did not say "Take a wildlife picture in the wild".

I believe in sticking to the rules, but also acknowledge that they are sometimes open to interpretation.

If you want to see some wild interpretations, check out any of the Environmental Portrait challenges.

Nah those aren't wild and neither were the studio portrait challenges. As you say there is no real way to do anything any more.

FWIW, my definition of wildlife at least for this challenge is a wild life animal is any animal that has the freedom to go where ever it wants to. So raccoons running around in a neighborhood is just as wild as a lion in the African Safari but a gazelle on an exotic ranch or a monkey at a zoo would not be. Pretty simply I think. Of course figuring out what's what in this challenge would be very difficult but anybody who has been here long enough can probably figured out which is which given the repeat subjects we get in free studies and the like.

here's my take. Long ago someone suggested the best way to approach a challenge is to come up with a picture that would make a good cover for a challenge-named magazine. In this challenge the magazine is called "WILDLIFE!" Now, we naturally want a shot that looks wild, but are we, the underpaid photographer, necessarily going to travel to the wilds of the Amazon to get it? Probably not. The photo needs to sell, but it doesn't need to be "real". Even National Geographic uses setup shots which utilize captured animals or baiting or whatever else is needed to get the shot.

Geeze man, I'm just trying to get people to think with a little more positive a mindset, sorry for stepping on your toes.

Mine was photographed in the wild and my score is 4.48 which is very frustrating because it is nice. I did some different processing in order to give mine the so-called elusive wow factor. Doesn't seem to matter.

I don't mind that people have submitted zoo shots. As long as it doesn't look like it is in a zoo then that should be what counts. I have taken zoo shots and it isn't always easy. So hats off to the people that succeed.

Well, my entry will never make the cover of a magazine, but I am enjoying my 7 comments! I'm well-entertained this week! Thank you to those who were generous.

This challenge ranks right up there with the Bokeh ones for contentiousness in the community. I've been able to witness two of the 'Wildlife' challenges prior to this one and many of the arguments are repeated, for both sides.

One thing that may be underlying in this is that when you go to the zoo, most of the time (not always I agree) the animals are in plain view and not running from the sight of a human. I've never been to a "Wildlife Park" so I don't know the conditions there (I imagine the animals are NOT as timid towards the sight of a human as they are in the true "wild"). Even without restraints (zoos, fenced animal park, etc...) there can be differences in the degree of "wildness" of animals. The squirrels around our home veer at the first sight of people...go to a local park where they are fed peanuts and they are fairly easy to approach within camera range.

Just pointing out a POV that may not have been addressed, and could be contributing to some of the wide range of opinions.

Well if National Geographic was using a bunch of zoo shots then I probably wouldn't look to them any more to find wildlife photography and I'm sure you wouldn't either. I wish I can remember the challenge not too long ago where you didn't budge an inch on interpretation. I don't suppose you'd help me out? :P

Totally agree, I belong to a wildlife photography club which has some really accomplished wildlife photogs (me not being one of them), they like to go get shots in the wild all over the world but everyone of them will go to the zoo from time to time and get some incredible shots, they still consider those to be wildlife shots. We do have two categories when the shots go up for voting the first being wildlife and the second being wildlife hand of man meaning they were taken of captive ainimals or there is some sign of man in the shot. Either way the shots they get are incredible and are considered wildlife.

Was it Overexposed? :) I can't remember either. Anyway, I think the point is National Geographic would certainly be considered a renown magazine for, among other things, wildlife. Now, if we are talking about the Wildlife III challenge, then clearly AlexSaberi's red ribbon should have been voted down for being on a preserve while I hiked into the Olympic Wilderness to capture that little deer on the beach!!! ;)

However, I'm not saying how I captured my Wildlife IV shot! ;)
