Hi Guys...

I finally decided to try and get more out of DPC (Stop lurking in other words)
I SOOOOOOO want to produce something better than usual, already have a couple of "OK" shots, but... how do I choose which one to enter? Just follow my heart and go with the one I like most??

Help PLEASE!

You'll be happier in general going that route.

However, you may become frustrated with the voters as they may not see things the same way you do.

lol.. that I assumed!

Man... I cant believe I've got 3 or 4 shots that (IMHO) is way better than the one I just miserably failed at in the previous challenge!!

Gosh... this is going to be tuff!

What she said! Unless your image is also DPC friendly, you might be quite disappointed with your score.

I would go with the one you like the best. I submitted an image I thought pretty highly of in last month's free study. It totally panned, almost .6 below the next lowest score for any image I have submitted (I don't have many yet ;) ).

Although the result is frustrating, DPC is about learning, and I feel better that I submitted the one I did instead of going for something a bit more conventional that I didn't like as much.

Also, in an unrelated note, as a former lurker, doesn't feel good to get out of the shadows in and in the fray?

That's an urban legend. The truth is that whatever doesn't kill you maims you beyond recognition and leaves you twitching in the bushes, bleeding out and praying for death.

In my mind, DPC is a place to grow, have fun taking pictures, and to help others grow.

In other words, shoot a shot for the challenge, it you will grow from it because you went out and practiced, and just have fun with it, because to me that's what it all comes down to.

Happy shooting!

...Well, not everyone makes it into that second category.

I just "un" lurked myself. My goal for my first challenge was to not come in last. 137th - 4.8141(yikes) I guess I achieved my goal. As for learning, I wish the comments made were more "teaching" if you know what I mean. If I submit it for the DPC Critique Club will I get that information?

You can start a thread in the individual photograph discussion section and ask for more feedback.

The Critique Club is for images you requested critique of during the challenge. There's a ticky box on the entry page and on your entry's page once voting has started. Once voting is over you use the individual photograph discussion area.

Seems as if we're in the same boat!

My recent experience is telling me: BE BOLD... ASK...
Perhaps I will be slaughtered for that.. but.. what the heck.. got nothing to lose!

In your opinion whats more important - taking a good photo or knowing how to edit it.
10/15/2008 04:04:00 PM · #19
1) getting to know my camera
2) taking better shots
3) learning from the masters (including PP)

BUT... would love to keep PP to the minimum

Both, though the latter is heavily dependent on the former.
10/15/2008 04:04:42 PM · #21
Without a doubt, taking a good photo. PP can only give you so much, and if the viewer has a trained eye no amount of photoshopping - hdr - and the like will help you.

My $.02.

You're 2 cents is appreciated. I agree but wasn't sure what everyone else thought. I know editing is limited in the challanges, but some of the photos look like they've been colored enhanced. Is that allowed?
10/15/2008 04:21:31 PM · #23
Getting to know the techniques can definitely be to your advantage. As long as your not looking at PP as a bailout to a bad photo you're fine.

I think an excellent example of how minimal or none PP can be beneficial, take a look at dwterry's highest scoring shot. Next to no PP. So knowing your equipment is pivotal. Then PP to tweak.

Just another $.02.

I so dislike this term, does this mean we all have to be in the same basket to receive a good score.

dwterry... the guy is a genius!!!

oops... I guess MASTER would be more appropriate!
