Did we ever have zero (absolutely no) editing challenges where all that was allowed was a crop and resize?

10/15/2008 01:32:43 PM · #2
That's more or less minimal editing. Been a small number of them, one fairly recently (long exposure).

edit: so i guess technically 'no', not like you describe. Though crop is illegal in minimal editing.

Stright from the camera, resize only, would be interesting... Just wondering how it could be enforced.

WOw! Thanks for the link.

I wish there were more of these.. so someone like me with abominable processing skills can reach the 5.0 avg mark ;-)

I wish there were no editing rules at all. Don't see the point in watching a marathon where everyone agrees to have their ankles broken beforehand.

While I am no purist, I would disagree with the no rules for all challenges. An occasional "open competition" do what you will challenge would be interesting, but not for a steady diet. At least not if we want to pretend it is about photography, as opposed to graphic arts.

Are you equating <ankle-running> relationship with <postprocessing-photography>???
Do you really think post processing is THAT important in photography? Ehehehhhhh.

From webster's dictionary,

"Main Entry: pho·tog·ra·phy
Function: noun
Date: 1839
the art or process of producing images by the action of radiant energy and especially light on a sensitive surface (as film or a CCD chip)"

Sorry I dont see post procesisng in this definition.

ET: Removed illegible characters for pronunciation.

If you can get a viewable image off your sensor without processing it, I'll send you my 5D. Why don't you spend time learning how to best process your images rather than ask everyone else to operate at your level.

This thread is in the "Challenge Suggestions" forum. A suggestion only to have more challenges with 'no editing' allowed, so 'pure' photography skills can be appreciated and rewarded sometimes. You are a great photog.. and I even have one of your images as a favorite (Left Behind). I just dont understand why you take everything so personal? Nobody can take your skills away from you, can they, if there was an occasional 'straight from the camera' challenge?

Prash...
I get your point ... some people however might not ;)
To summarize my opinion: Isn't it fun to differ in opinion and still have the opportunity to say it out loud without being jailed for it!

A viewable image, off my sensor, no processing? Oh pack up that 5D now, PM me for the address. Gawd I love contests with no rules afterall...

I don't even have to use my printer for this one...

ETA: Dang she beat me again. But with mine you don't even get a camera, so mine's better.

I haven't taken anything personally. You expressed what you wanted, I said I wanted something else. You start quoting me dictionary definitions, so I tell you to go improve your skills. You said regarding zero-editing challenges "I wish there were more of these.. so someone like me with abominable processing skills can reach the 5.0 avg mark". Why should everyone else's creative options be hampered so that you can score better? That was my point. It's not a personal thing at all.

Really? Whatever method you use to convert electrical signals into a visual media is processing. Looking forward to seeing the results.

What conversion of electrical signals? Oh, you are thinking so inside the box. You need to quit relying on software and computers.

Ok I understand you said that as an opinion. I am only trying to emphasize the fact that the classic definition of photography be (re)lived sometimes. And another thing is: I may never score better.. no matter what the rules. But just the idea of a RAW buffer dumped out of the body with no touch at all fascinates me. Again, just a suggestion. Not a request, not a demand. Just an honest suggestion.

(( runs off to get the shield :-))

Gee, there's a computer in my camera so I have to stop relying on it. I guess a challenge with the traditional pinhole is in order.
