Strength has some of the most amazing shots in it-haven't seen an open challenge with this level of greatness in a while!

Ah, so you've seen my entry, huh?

Seriously, though, I agree there's quite a bit of good stuff here...

I've gotta agree with Pierson, there are some great shots in the strength challenge!

Pitsaman are you being a snob again?

I understand both points of view. As usual the majority of the photos are mediocre (mine included), but I did give out 18 tens to photographs that I felt were excellent. The topic was difficult however so I could see how the challenge might be a bit dissapointing in that regard.

First 8 votes score 7.4,after 17 - 5.9 ,like always !

The one's are out tonight......as always..This challenge I get a 7.... 7.....8....8..and then a 1...over 6 to under 5.....lol...this site has changed..

I guess I should stop going into challenges expecting higher than 5 scores (is that too much to ask) but once again I've been dissapointed with myself but here I am with 18 votes and a 4.9444 well, at least I'm close.

I have to agree that there are some great shots in the Strength challenge.. and I'm not even halfway through yet.

My entry started out very nicely, but it's falling fast - not that I'm surprised, that's pretty much the norm for me. I'll be happy if I can get back to staying over 5 though, lol.

I feel you.

I think I'm going to stop trying to think outside the box, and just go for what DPCers want.

I thought I had an original idea, but after seen all the pictures at least 20 pictures have the same object an one is almost simular.....

score is 4 and dropping.... :-(
04/14/2004 03:59:38 AM · #14
I'm not that brave as you are... after my latest very low score I tryed to stay away from photography and more into my paintings where I feel I am a bit better. I dared to compete again and after a few hours only I am thinking to write the admin and have my photo removed. The 4 something and dropping is telling me that not photography I should do but anything else not related to a camera.

You've taken some very nice shots, and it would be all the sparser without something different. Do you know what I mean? I tend to think of it as 'you take some bad photo's, you take some good photo's.. the ups aren't nearly as good without the downs.'

I wouldn't feel so bad personally. For my rating system if you don't capture the theme very well you won't get over 5. What I mean by this is if I look at your photo and the first thing that comes to mind is bridges (just an example), you didn't capture the theme enough to make it clear. I only gave out two 10's this challenge. Both of which the second you look at them you know exactly what the theme was.

After that I go 1-5 for how good a photo is that didn't capture the theme, and 6-10 for how good a photo DID capture the theme. Lighting, composition, etc gets rated here.

In other words a really crappy photo that says 'strength' to me will get a 6. And at the same time a superb photo that brings to mind something other than 'strength' will get a 5. I like to reward people for nailing the theme.

What is the theme?
Subject of this challenge is very wide, can be emotional, material, visual etc..
Nobody says take photo of a strong man !
Strength can be represented in million ways, think about it!
if everyone stuck in certain subject like drunk for the fence ,it would be a very boring challenge!

When I came home I had a 5.2, I don't remember how many votes, but now I'm just under 30 votes with a 4.5. This blows.

Well said! I'm sure most of the photos in the Strength challenge that I thought were best (so far, anyway, I haven't finished yet..) will end up suffering from ratings by narrow-minded viewers. Strength is an especially broad category, and I think the varying interpretations made it one of the most interesting challenges I've yet rated.

I've lost half a point in the past 15 votes... booo! lol

I expect to lose another point at least before it stops falling. *sigh*

This is probably my all time favourite shot, too... so far. Oh well, at least someone must've gotten it for it to have started out with a decent score :)

Well true enough. For myself, I have a fairly well defined notion of why strength to me is. Some things I saw in this challenge in my opinion are far better defined as something like faith, something I saw a lot of. For me, faith does not signify strength, it signifies.. faith. I guess we all interpret everything different.

My point was perhaps you shouldn't feel bad for receiving a low score if you don't know why the person voted that way.

I also recommend grading your score on a curve. If the winners rarely break a score of 8.0, then a 4.5 isn't exactly a 4.5, it's more like a 5.6, if 8.0 was equal to a 10.
04/14/2004 05:04:07 AM · #25
I hope I don't do anything bad if I say that faith can be strength too. Think Joanna D'Arc. I hope I spelled right. But not only... the faith can be a way to fight. Fighting death with just the strength that faith gives you can sometimes lead to victory.
