: My Submission

: My Original

I don't know if its kosher to discuss DQs or not but I really need a 2nd opinion on this?

What distortion?

SC would have to chime in on this one, but when I took it into photoshop and cropped it as close to what you did, the perspectives didn't match up quite right. Are you sure you didn't put a little bit of a lens correction tool on this?

The entry appears distorted, but the original shows that this was how it came out of the camera. That should be legal.

Yeah I couldn't line it up with the original either and I used the Kodak lettering as a guide so to get the alignment right. It appears there was a very slight distortion that's missing in the original, according to my little test anway.

A little bit of lens correction shoudl be ok, that was not the cause of the distorted appearance. A wideangle lens was.

Well, I didn't go as far as to open both in PS and overlay them, but the text on the signs looks the same on each. If this had been stretched, the text would also look distorted. Tough call here for SC perhaps.

i dont even know what a lens correction tool is... all i did was fix the horizon a degree or 2 maybe that made it look distorted?
10/06/2008 01:06:59 AM · #8
it wasnt distorted, it was rotated
i just put em in photoshop and was able to line them up almost pixel for pixel

i took two screenshots - one of the color version - one of the challenge b&w version
then i put them both into photoshop, laid them over each other, and rotated the color version a little bit to line them up as good as i could
i cropped them in just so it would be easier

here is the .psd file of the two over top of eachother

in my opinion it was not distorted - it only took me 90 seconds of rotating/resizing to line them up

I think the SC was in error on this one.
10/06/2008 01:11:35 AM · #10
I dunno - I tried lining them up and had the right side matched up ok, but could not get the left side to align without skewing or stretching. I am guessing this is what they saw. It's subtle, but unless you can show them lined up without distorting... It could have been a mistake as simple as forgetting to hold shift down during a free transform.

I take it back - I was able to rotate and scale evenly and got a near perfect alignment. Vindicated, I believe! It just takes some effort. I don't know why the SC doesn't grant the benefit of doubt anyway and give someone a chance to appeal.....

I tried it again and it does seem legal to me. It was rotated but when I tried it earlier it looked like maybe the left side was altered a little but trying it again it seems to lineup up pretty well. It shouldn't be a DQ.

I just rotated it a few degrees, that's why its not lining up...

I hope i didn't have any other slip ups surely nothing was intentional, they should line up when you rotate... grr... this is really upsetting me - especially after my 'beverage' shot was DQ'd for something that IMO was a borderline judgment call

Thanks for the input guys

I support appealing the DQ, I don't think my oily peppers need an HM that badly! ;)

Did you submit an appeal to the SC? Where is the SC? How much time should we give it before I start handing out pitchforks?
10/06/2008 01:34:15 AM · #18
i don't understand why you weren't queried on it
10/06/2008 01:37:08 AM · #19
If the pixels fit, you must acquit! :)

I reported your first post - that should get SC's attention and hopefully someone will post here. You also should go to help->contact us and ask them what's up.

Just tried it myself and don't see any distortion

ETA: rotated by 1,8 degrees

Man I don't get it...that's a cruel blow for an amazing image
10/06/2008 03:07:38 AM · #23
ahh.. rotation. I didn't even think of that.

Sorry about the DQ though, SC probably won't ever go back on one, so you're probably just going to have to chalk it up to experience and try and keep better detailed processing notes next time. heh.
10/06/2008 03:12:44 AM · #24
It doesn't seem distorted once rotated. I hope you get re-instated. Did you tell SC in your validation that you rotated the image? Maybe they thought you didn't and used lens correction instead. Either way, good luck.
