I think someone is giving out lots of these. I've got one too. Not complaining though :-)

It was most likely me haha. I want to make sure everyone gets a vote but I don't have time to comment on every single picture :P

I'm new to DPC, are those short comments okay? or is not commenting frowned apon?

With an Avg Vote Cast: 2.3807 I would say that yes, you are the one responsible for the smiley comments matched with the one votes. You do realise that someone who likes voting 1's on a high percentage of your voted images will have their votes scrubbed at the end of voting?????

Not quite familiar with the whole structure of voting yet. So basically if you are going to vote low, then don't vote at all?

I usually comment to explain my vote. If you look at my profile you'll see what I use to vote and (hopefully) help the photographer. It's nice of you to leave that =], but I think most would prefer a comment that tells them what you saw, liked, disliked or even might try different...especially if you are voting the image low. I still try and do it on high ranking images too just so they know what I was thinking. Some feel they are too new and not experienced enough to have an opinion that is worth anything but it doesn't matter if you are new or not you still have an opinion.

Not necessarily, but are you spreading your scores out? The scale goes from 1-10. You don't have to comment to vote - you can simply vote and move to the next picture if you wish. If you are leaving a low vote, it might be nice to leave a comment as to why - that helps the photographer understand why their entry may not be doing well, or at least didn't work for you. A smiley with a 1 doesn't compute for some people. :-)

Ah okay, well of course anyone would love an in-depth response to their photo :P I had originally thought that the more votes the better, and was unaware of scrubbed votes, so I will only vote and comment on those who are photographically and compositional done well, or if I have more time then give some constructive criticism to those in need. Often being quite critical my vote count will slowly but surely ascend haha. Thanks for your responses! Definitely appreciate any useful info for new DPC members.

I gotta admit that seeing the votes of 1 come through in vote are tough - but its so much fun when those 1s get scrubbed and you take anice bump at rollover.

I totally agree. But on the other hand...I see so much anguish during voting over people receiving 1 votes and this only leads to disgruntled members who are easily fired up into arguments and revenge voting. That can be avoided if people were made aware of the consequences of their actions.

Nobody is asking you to not vote or comment on the images that you dont like. I think most people are just looking for people to vote honestly using the entire scale (or at least the majority of it) and when it comes to comments they are looking for something at least a little thought out. Smiley faces as comments on 500+ entries makes them mean very little. And this community is pretty vocal so when patterns like this arise you have to understand that they will be discussed in the threads.

That all said - vote your conscience, comment when you can, and have fun. The DPC crowd is a great crowd to hang with.

While trying to get more votes in is a great thing to shoot for, you will often find it not possible or end up giving votes that might not be fair. With so many people voting all entries get a pretty good spread of votes. Everyone sees the images to vote on in a different order to help spread out the wealth. It has been a long time since I've had the time to vote, till now, but when I do I concentrate more on getting the required minimum and giving my honest opinion. It will be more appreciated in the long run.

As this is at least in part a learning site, commenting and voting on only the good photographs may not be as productive as giving constructive criticism to those in need. Those who are good pretty much already know it. They may enjoy being rewarded (don't we all?) but I think there's more bang for your buck in the other direction. Oh, and welcome to DPC!

Oh gosh haha, now I feel bad for leaving any 1 votes...I haven't even submitted any photos to a challenge yet and I already have those seeking revenge haha. I just had figured the more votes submitted the better. I just know with the way digital photography is going today, the demand for higher quality photos are getting much greater, and a strong critic can often push you to hammer out some better images.

Will definitely take everyone's advice, and I'm glad to hear DPC has a relaxed structure with a friendly environment. Looking forward being a part of the community.

Definitely agree Melethia, I will absolutely give some constructive cristism to those in need when I can, and thank you for the welcome to DPC. :D

I just find it really irritating when people throw out low votes and have sub 4 averages when:

a) They haven't entered any challenges
b) They do not put a reason why they are voting so low - There is obviously a reason the image didn't strike a chord with that person and at least a comment on that might be of some use to the submitter.

An average of 2.xxxx by anyone is IMHO appalling and suggests that person thinks the majority of images on this site are of a seriously low quality, in which case one would expect to see the images of said voter on the front page practically every week. Then I would have to ask why that person would be looking for CC on their own work as they obviously have no regard for the other members work anyway.

There I feel a little better now ;)

ETA: Oh and welcome to DPC :)

Actually I do wish you a warm and friendly welcome :)

The comments I made were general, unfortunately you are the only one brave enough or daft enough to put their hand up to voting 1s and 2s by the bucket load and so drew a bit too much attention to yourself ;)

Seriously though I hope your stay here is long and beneficial :)

Steve - Welcome to DPC. It is a great community.

I think it is interesting that you find the work here at DPC to be bad (a 1 is bad and a 10 is good based on the rating scale we have been using for 6+ years). I can't wait to see your high quality work really shine here. I can see from the images you have posted up to now that you are saving your best work for later...

Fixed typo

I'll skip the sarcasm...

This shot would hold it's own on DPC in a 'Leading Lines', 'Shallow DOF', or 'Single Line' challenge without question IMO.

ETA - in advance of the smart alecks around here...yes, the text would be a DQ, but this IS a portfolio image not a challenge entry.

When im voting low on an entry I always say why I have done so. If I cant give a constructive reason why im going to vote low i skip it and come back later on when I have had time to put my thoughts into words.

I really appreciate comments from the people who vote olw on mine, wish there were a few more as I am still learning 9have only had my camera for a few months and know I can be great sometimes (not on any challenges so far, lol)

Welcome to dpc smiley face Steve : )

I clearly didn't realize the severity/structure of the voting process like I had mentioned above, I apologize again for the 1's, didn't mean to offend anyone. Like I have stated on my profile, I won't baby your picture and I expect the same those who critique my photos. I'm growing as a photographer/designer and want only what will make me stronger at what I do. I appreciate honesty from others and most people do as well. Really looking forward to submit to the challenges as I haven't attempted anything of this sort before, looks to be like a lot of fun. Also making new friends/photographers globally is something I look forward to also. Thanks for the welcomes and happy shooting.
