Is this basically a FS? Or is it an interpretation of "Bummer!" Something that we wanted to happen but DIDN'T get...?
09/17/2008 10:54:26 AM · #2
I take it to mean any negative event that would possibly be a "bummer". I think this is another one that is open to wide interpretation.

Here's a good example from a currently active side challenge:

Perhaps I should enter my Immovable Entry - the results were a real Bummer!

I've got an idea in mind; got the whole set-up planned out in my head actually, quite looking forward to it. It'll no doubt turn out at half the quality I envision but I'm gonna give it a bash on Friday. I chose this challenge instead of the other because no matter what I do, the light in my b&w pics always seems to look flat!

The results of minor road accidents should do it. ;-)

Found this in a dictionary

Bummer: Slang One that depresses, frustrates, or disappoints: example ,Getting stranded at the airport was a real bummer´

This adds a few more options.

//www.thefreedictionary.com/bummer

But at the end of the challenge with the exception of the three ribbon winners WE WILL ALL BE SAYING

"O bummer! I never thought of that."

(No offense to Karmat) While that is a great picture it doesn't say Bummer to me without the title and then there will be complaints about shoe horning. The picture certainly says he is sad or at least not happy, but not really bummer (maybe if we saw the scoreboard or a player entering the end zone in the background that would help). The other examples are much better.

I respectfully disagree. I didn't need the title to pick up on what was happening. He clearly looks defeated to me, and the sweat and the jersey help tell the story. Perhaps it is subtle, but I think that's what makes it so effective. Obviously your perception was different...

I wouldn't vote this particular image very high in a challenge called "Bummer", but that's just me. Which is why threads like this are kind of pointless IMO.

Found the 2. noun definition funny. What is DPC wanting us to do here :)

Just wait until you see my shot on the front page and you'll know what the voters are going to be looking for... :-D It's such the ideal bummer shot, I don't even think I'll need a title. ;-)

Go DPCO Southwest!

I wish I'd had my camera with me last night, there was a pickup truck that got his/her rear smashed in big time. The entire back end of the drivers side was out of place, bent metal and plastic everywhere you looked.

I'm glad it happened to the back of the truck because I don't think the driver would be doing so well if it'd been up front. Guess I'll have to go look somewhere else.

For the bummer challenge, I decided to take to a more humorous approach.
I generally say the word "bummer" when a sticky situation takes place in which sucks but doesnt greatly impact in a negative way.

ex. Losing your home to a hurricane shouldnt be described as a bummer, thats traumatic, genuinely sucks, and an extremely horrible thing to happen.

however,

making a plate of delicious of food, then in the midst of walking to the dinner table to enjoy your meal, you trip on your cat and the food ends up splattered all over the floor.
Now thats a bummer.

Did I misread or did you just tell us what your entry is.....?

I could have done the same today, but could not bring myself to take the shot. I was on EMS duty, and we responded to a very bad accident. A 15 yr old unlicensed driver was behind the wheel as her 18 yr and 20 yr old drunken friends had her driving them around. The passenger decided to mess around and yank on the steering wheel while they were driving 55 mph down the highway sending them into the path of another car. Sadly the driver of the other car was a young pregnant gal who was in her 8th month of gestation. She suffered some broken bones, and worst of all lost the baby. It breaks your heart on these type calls. No way could I ring myself to take the pic of the car she was in, or what was left of it.

Gosh, that's so horrible :( Bad enough when drunken idiots nearly kill themselves but when they endanger others as well, it makes me wanna string them up by their hair and beat them with something sharp. That poor woman losing her baby so close to term....I applaud you for having the strength to do such a job, it must take nerves of steel.

In Australia we have a series of 'Bugga' adverts that people just love. They are so along the lines of this Bummer challenge that I just had to post them. If they don't give you ideas....then I hope they at least give you a laugh.

They do for all of us Aussies!

I agree in that the photo itself doesn't have enough context in which to gauge what he's really experiencing nor does it look like he's bummed about anything (IMO). He could just be really focused on something that may have nothing to do with the game, or that he's sad or that is just the way he looks after every game. I've seen enough athletes in my day to know that look can be expressed by players on either team after a game regardless of outcome. Everyone acts differently after a win or a loss. Also, when you capture a single moment in time almost any expression is possible. You could capture someone looking upset even though they may have been happy but the moment that was captured fools the viewer.

Regardless of all of that, I am of the opinion you should take the photographer's word for it since she was there and none of us were. I know many photographers here have no problems lying about shots just to shoehorn them in but you can't automatically assume that is what Karmat would do. The right thing to do as a voter is to give the benefit of the doubt to the photographer.

Perhaps the right thing for YOU to do is that. It's not the right thing for me to do. If the photographer cannot convey the challenge to me in their photograph, I vote it lower. That's all there is to it. I don't sit there and say, "Well, I'm sure they meant well."

Such is the great thing about diversity.

hah no LadyTara,
I have got something else in mind.
Just gave a humorous example to prove my point.

Although, I wondered if that particular concept with be used??
