Whoever came up with this gem should post an example.

Totally agree. My brain hurts! I guess if you come up with something good, there won't be much competition. Good luck to the 300+ entrants in the "Bummer!" challenge :)

Well, somebody's finally noticed my black and white pictures haven't been very colourful lately....

This hurts my brain too! Maybe take a shot of something that has a strong association to a color (lemon, rose)??????
But your right Bummer and this are going to have a vastly different number of entries I feel!

I don't have examlpes to post but way back in high school photography class we had the assignment "Red" - of course we only shot b&w film at the time.

I submitted a long exposure of my friend's fingers with motion blur playing his guitar. A classmate did a shot of his brother's Mustang GT doing a smokey burn-out.

Edit becasue I can't type.

There was a black and white photo of a banana in the last Yellow challenge. It said "Yellow" to me. ;-)

A fascinating challenge to me. Looking forward to voting (and even shooting) this one. Will take some thoughtful voting, I think. A bit more than just looking for the quick eye-catchers.

I'm giving you a 10 - just for that positive attitude!

I too think this has possibilities. In fact, Deb. I was reading a comment of yours just yesterday that had me thinking of the concept of black and white in color. It was on this photo:

Karen, that was the opposite challenge--where you had to take a color photo of something that actually was black and white. This one means we have to take a black and white picture that screams 'color!'

Except those were color images which looked black & white.

The current challenge is to have a black & white image, which makes you think of color.

I saw this challenge and thought "Bummer!"
09/17/2008 11:20:55 AM · #15
its so confusing...this description is:

Create a black and white photo that nevertheless communicates color in some way. The final photo MUST be in black and white (and the grays in between).

and the other description was:

Take a COLOR photo of a black & white (or gray scale) subject or subjects. Conversion/desaturation to black and white or shooting in black and white is NOT allowed.

any ideas?

I think we are suppose to take a image of something very colorful and convert it to Black and White. And the viewer should think color when they see it.

Something like a stop light or a stop sign will make you think of RED,
A rainbow, in B&W will still make you think of the colours in it.
A sky over grass will make you imagine Blue and green.
Devil = RED
Barbie = Pink
Ferrari colour = ?
Alien = ?
etc.

Not too difficult really.

I'm trying to figure out how to conjure up an awesome rainbow on demand ... along with a leprechaun and pot o'gold!

Art and Photography results is ALL about the perception of the results.

Ideas are cheap, execution and graphic interpretation is the expense of time.
I'm not particular ideas giving any away, maybe for a monetary donation, PM me on that.
Think through the eyes/brains of a Deer.

1) Certain items are Always Percieved to be certain colors.
2) Let them Feel the colors, by what they represent.
3) There is also room here for juxtaposition of contrast/similarity.

I see. So take a picture in b/w of something which everyone already associates with some certain color. Easy enough.
09/17/2008 03:06:28 PM · #24
Or take a picture in B&W that implies color - blue, as in a mood; red, as in anger; green, and in lush and growing. Of course the more literal subjects - oranges, apples, blueberries, stop lights - will score better. The neat thing is it makes you see in B&W but think in color. :-)

I get the feeling this will be low on the vote count.
