Working on my contrast skills...

Appears low contrast to me...kind of dark. At least on my monitor.

I must be the odd one out then. I prefer the first one, I like them darker.

I prefer the first one also.

I think it could use just a little more light on the center of the blossom to bring out more detail. Or pull it out with shadow/highlist in photoshop or etc.

very nice :)

The 2nd one is definitely better. The white is much whiter and you can make some of the detail of the center of the flower. Play with the curves. The whites are more grey in the first one and since you are going for dramatic lighting, shadow is the key. Stronger light and or minor adjustments of the lamp can also help. Good job!

I prefer the first one I like the darker edges created by the petals maybe you could get more overall contrast with some more lighter areas but keeping the dark shades.

Its all a matter of personal taste (also mood etc)... some may think the first is too dark but to me its just fine. I like the second one also.

In both cases you are not taking full advantage of the available contrast range. You could move the white point in quite a bit, the histogram is compressed to tle left2/3 of the range.
Here's my take:

I also upped the contrast slightly using curves after applying the white point adjustment (using levels)

Good work Calvus, looks the best on my monitor for detail and contrast appeal.
