I like the idea as well... I'm from the San Fernando Valley as well...specifically Northridge.

Northridge is only about an hour from Downtown LA (with traffic) right? We could meet somewhere in LA one Sunday to go on a photo trip. Perhaps we could work on sh1ft.org projects once a month or so (she doesn't always post them each month, but there's one right now). What's the easiest LA meeting spot that's good for photos? I am pretty new here so I don't know the area yet.

How often, if ever do you visit the L.A. Aboretum?

//www.arboretum.org/

I try to visit there 3-4 times a year and it's been a few months.

My weekends can be unpredictable, usually with one day reserved for golf or bicycle riding.

Hello,
I've already been mentioned by Steve... I live in the 'Slums' of Marin yet nobody seems to see the humor in that. I have noticed quite a few more local people living in the SF Bay area than have become aware of this thread. Maybe we could send them PM's to encourage a get together. Judging by the photography many of you have contributed I could learn plenty from a group workshop. SFAlce makes a good point in that the North Coast is exploding whith 'Kodak photo ops'. I mentioned to Steve that it would throw a cureve at the Challenge if we had a big group of people all take pictures of the same subject and submit it for the same challenge... Maybe they would enjoy a wake up call from the Golden State Contingent.

This was one of the latest S.F Bay Area meeting thread. Started a day after this one but disappeared.

I also live in the San Fernando Valley in the LA area - Northridge. I grew up in Northern Calfornia, Tiburon to be exact. Would love to get together with other local dpcers for a photo shoot.

Hello All,
I'm here in Cali for schooling purposes. I live in Malibu and am going to Pepperdine University. For those of you that might be interested, there is a very interesting and fairly extensive photography exhibit currently at the Getty, most definitely worth checking out. Some of the featured photographers include: Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Edward Weston, Man Ray, and Alexander Rodchenko just to name a few. They also have some very interesting photographs from as far back as 1832.

(P.S. If anyone doesn't know, the Getty is in LA. //www.getty.edu)

Sounds good to me. I'm not familiar with sh1ft.org, but I will look into it. There are actually a lot of nice photo op locations in the area. Downtown itself is one. There is also the Huntington Library grounds, the L.A. Arboretum, as mentioned by garrywhite2... I also like Lake Balboa Park in the Sepulveda Recration Basin here in the Valley...I have gotten some nice egret and heron shots there. Pepperdine was also mentioned, which includes the local coastal areas. I am definitely interested in hooking up with others anywhere (reasonably) within the L.A. area. If anyone wants to take the lead and set something up, and assuming my schedule permits, I'd be happy to join in!

I'm... kind of split between the Nor Cal's and So Cal's. I'm originally from Northern California, Sacramento area. My parents still live up there, and so I'm up there a lot. I just moved down to Southern California to Lancaster, where I'm teaching now. I'm new to the area down here, and also new to photography.. which doesn't make a great combination! Anything fun to photograph out here without heading down into LA?

So Cal Poppy Fields... Okay, for those of us in the LA area, there is a post on another thread about going to Gorman Poppy field in a few weeks. I suggested a date, but not sure who will be interested. I am thinking Sunday, Apr 25th around 10:30am or 11:00am or so. If anyone is interested, there's a separate thread for this trip to post on. Or email me at arie@mirdonamy.com :)

For those into photographing birds, check out Petersen's Photographic Mag (May issue)... There is a piece on shooting birds. The shots in the article were taken at Balboa Lake here in the San Fernando Valley in the L.A. area. If you like birds, consider checking it out. I have gotten some really good shots there.

Eric (eswik), it's been awhile since I've stopped at the Coyote Bar & Grill in South Laguna to eat breakfast. One weekend soon I'll make the trip and likely spend the rest of the morning in Laguna. I'm familiar with the area, what are some of your favorite places?

I would also like to spend a full day at Joshua Tree Monument, if anyone else is interested. Like to go before it gets really warm. The daytime is great for capturing the desert, and the night sky there is awesome.

Just remember that the desert gets really cold when the sun goes down.

These trips all sound fun! I think I want to stick pretty close to LA for now though. 1. money factor, 2. time factor. I can spare a day (usually Sunday), but Mon through Sat usually is work... hard to get away. I do want to see photos of our great State. So, please post them after you go on these adventures. I am planning on going to Monterey & Pacific Grove during Thanksgiving to see the Monarch Migration. Anyone else? I am also planning to go to Tahoe in Winter (I hope).

I am thinking we should do a California Photography page that we can all upload to. Other than a free site like YahooGeocities, does anyone have secure access on their server for us to have a general user/pass to upload photos to (that will not affect your own site in any way)? I will eventually, but that'll be months down the line. For now, I'll think of some ideas!

Will anyone be at Coachella this weekend? They allow cameras (so long as there are no removable lenses). They must be non-pro.
