Well...getting ready to evacuate again. Looks like this one is aimed up the Mississippi River. You can check my thread here from 3 years ago nearly to the day when I fled Katrina !
How about some prayer or some positive thoughts to send that hurricane to a place more able to handle it than New Orleans.
I'll keep you up to date.

While it certainly pays to be prepared I would not react too quickly to the media telling us where the storm is going. The National Hurricane Center puts it at 28.5N 88.5W with 100 KT winds five days out. But they are also quick to add
"IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THERE STILL REMAINS SIGNIFICANT
UNCERTAINTY REGARDING GUSTAV'S ULTIMATE TRACK AT DAYS 3-5...AND IT
IS MUCH TOO SOON TO KNOW WHAT IMPACT THIS SYSTEM MAY HAVE ON THE
NORTHERN GULF COAST."

| No matter which way it turns it's going to hit the gulf coast and my thoughts are with any that are in it's path. |

You are right. However, this place should empty out even if the chance is 50/50. The last one put flood water in the city at 15ft in some areas and some lucky ones only had 4 to 5 feet.
Since we live in a "bowl" we can't take the chance. If the course is still the same on Sunday morning, I'll have to head north. It took 12-20 hours to travel 90 miles during the Katrina evacuation.

Good luck Ken. Hope the hurricane goes elsewhere. I'm curious where you lived in NO last time and whether you went back to the same house/apt? I heard yesterday that the Feds have spent 126 billion in NO since Katrina.
Seems like that much dough could have got a lot of dump truck loads of dirt.
I've always been amazed at some of the National Geographic images showing a community in NO and in the background ABOVE the homes and people there is an ocean going vessel passing by. |

| I'm a bit scared that it will swing this way. Central and North Florida have had so much rain that just afternoon sprinkles are causing worse flooding. I live in a fairly elevated area yet water is just sitting in our ditch out front, the ground too soaked to accept even a drop more of water. :/ |

We got about 2 1/2 inches of rain in about 1 hour this evening. There was water 6 inches deep across main street downtown for a while tonight. I think that we got about 16 inches or so in this area during the Fay event.
Here's the latest from the NWS'
Nat'l Weather Service Tropical Prediction Center
Click on the storm to see the predicted 5 day track. It looks bad for N Florida and N Orleans.

Todays five day forecast looks a little better. It's 5th day location is 100 miles west from yesterdays position. If this continues another day NO is gonna dodge a bullet. Even where it is on todays forcast the winds will be pushing Lake Pontchartrain away from the city which should help the levies hold.

Why is it that people build or rebuild in a location that we know is prone to flooding, natural disasters, tornado, or whatever, and then want people to feel sorry for them when it happens?
Its like living in a trailer park in Kansas or Oklahoma, building in the flood plain of the Mississippi, or living on any of the coasts that are in hurricane alley. The US government spends Billions of dollars rebuilding something thats BELOW sea level and is in the path of hurricanes and tropical storms, just more of our tax dollars wasted. I just dont understand why we do what we do as humans sometimes.

On another note, I do hope that this turns away and doesnt cause any problems for anyone.

| I hope that hurrican goes Puff! and disappears. It is going to cause a lot of havok if it reaches category 3-4 status and hits us again. :( |

weather.com makes it look like it did a crazy turn around, I'm not much to know about hurricanes, so it could turn back around, but it looks pretty nice for now.

Us FL residents should be more worried about TD 8, which is predicted to become a hurricane and head straight for us...
EDIT: TD 8 is now TS Hanna.

Just west of NO would be bad too, because the wind would be driving the gulf into the bay, causing a huge tidal surge in the delta and along the coastline nearby. The current track prediction puts NO in the line of fire, but maybe not a direct hit. The weather channel says it's moving SSW, which is away from us at this time. The longer it holds SSW, the more to we west it will be when it turns northward.

I'm one that is willing to and will "take my medicine".
We built a home 40 miles north of N.O. after the Katrina hurricane. However, we are now back on the South Shore of the lake again....don't ask...!
My wife's friend just completed her home repairs from katrina (major damage) and she said she feels sorry for her. I said don't feel sorry for her...and don't feel sorry for (us). Like us, she decided to build back in the "bowl". We're insured and she is insured. If we get hit we'll just have to take our medicine like a "big boy or girl" and get back to work.
