I have a 40D and am lost on the following custom funcitons. Any help is VERY appreciated. (I read the manual for all of these but need a better explanation).
C.Fn II-3 - Highlight Tone Priority
What does this do? Does anyone have example images or can explain this custom funtion?
C.Fn III-2 - Lens AF stop button function
I'm confused between the 5 options here. Can anyone make it simple?
C.Fn III-3 - AF point selection method
Specifically, setting 2: Quick Control Dial direct, what is the purpose of setting exposure in this setting? Seems unrelated to focusing. Kind of confused.
Finally, I mainly shoot in RAW. And focus and meter separately. For me, would I be able to use the Custom Modes on the dial or are these for JPEG shots only? Can someone explain the benefits of using a mode like this?

This is for picking the AF point, not setting exposure.

reduces the available ISO from 100-3200 to 200-1600 and essentially extends the highlight range to reduce blown highlights.

I can't say I understand them all either. One of them (4 i think) makes the * button the 'focus' button instead of the 1/2 press of the shutter button. I like this feature and it's easy to get used to.

this Func lets you decide how you will choose what AF point is active. You have the option of letting the camera choose or you can decide which AF point will be used for cfocus with the joystick (my choice) or the wheel on the back.

| just one thing i'm still unsure about, the custom functions C1, C2, and C3. can anyone give examples of how you would use them in RAW? |

First, I presume you are talking about the there user settings (C1, C2, C3) on the the dial. These settings having nothing to do with RAW. If you have a particular setup that you frequently use, you can assign to one of these settings. For example, if am shooting outdoor portraits have C1 assigned to Av, f/2.8, ISO100 (highlight tone priority is on), single shot, spot meter, WB custom. C2 assigned for action or fast moving subjects, Av f/2.8, WB Auto, ISO Auto, High burst mode(40D is very fast!), AI SERVO, spot meter. C3 is set up for landscapes with a AEB of -2,0,+2, Auto ISO, WB custom, Av f/11, spot meter. I find this most useful when switching between subjects, so instead of making multiple changes, just turn the dial. I'll occasionally change the settings, i.e., if I'm heading out for a hike, and I'm looking to shoot macro and landscapes, turn the dial and swap lenses. It makes it a little bit easier, but in the end it's not hard to change the settings once you are accustomed to their location.

I've not seen a difference in contrast. Different picture styles will have an impact on contrast and therefore DR. Neutral and Faithful are a tad flatter than Landscape and standard for instance.
