It was only Greece and Germany that had a couple of non birth right players. It was becuase there where not enough players on the team to compete otherwise.

Dirt, I think you do need to clear up the the team idea though. I did read that you thought not having country based teams, then i read it was. So it is a little unclear on that aspect.

I thought the whole even out teams with average scores idea was pretty good.

DD, is it only you setting this up and do you need any help? I would be happy to offer Juliet's services if need be! =^D

(seriously though)I would also be happy to help.

Just wanted to thrown in my 2 cents,

There was nothing particularly special or 'stacked' about team Poland coming into DPCO II, only 2 of us had averages above a 6. I want to echo the sentiments previously expressed by Mak and say that commitment was the dispositive factor in our win - each of us tried hard and entered every challenge, and each of us had strong weeks and weaker weeks. The fact that we always had 8 entries in the pool maximized the chances of one of us coming up with a winner. I just think participation needs to be taken into account in whatever scoring system is settled upon.

As far as the birthright thing is concerned, that will be (1) impossible to prove and (2) it will further exacerbate the skill difference between teams b/c of the shortage of photographers from certain parts of the world.

When replying in that thread identify your country of birth (that's how Dirt Diver is arranging the teams).

Re-itereated for anyone not reading past the most recent post.

My $.02

In this day and age the whole birthright thing seems outdated. Many people have multiple citizenship, multiple identities and should have the right to choose where they want to play. That, and the fact that the concept of birthright sounds offensive.

How can it be offensive? If there is more than enough for one team, the country can start another team. At the end of the day there will be folks that get distributed to other teams to fill them up, so that as few people as possible get left out. How is that offensive? I think you are taking it a bit too seriously...this if for fun, remember?

If you simply allow teams to band together it is a) not like the original spirit of the olympics which was country vs country and b) would result in something like the Ribbon Hogs fiasco from the last DPL. That was offensive.

Take someone who was born in Russia but spent their whole life in the US. Do you force them to play for Russia? Or closer to home...take someone who was born in India but who is really actually Canadian. Do you exclude them from playing for Canada? We don't really work like that around here.

That's quite different from people just trying to play for another team because they want to up their chances of winning. The two issues are separate, and should be given separate weight considerations. On the one hand, people should be free to decide which team feels closer to home. On the other hand, people should stick to that team and not switch when their chances of winning are higher elsewhere.

Give it a rest! I am quite sure that if your profile says you are living in the US and you say you want to play for the US because you have lived there for years and is what you consider your home country, no one is going to force you out. It is not that serious. It is a general guideline, not written in stone. I am well aware that there are lots of folks that come to the USA and to Canada to get away from bad situations in the country where they were born, and I find it hard to believe that anyone here would force someone to play for a country they no longer consider to be home. Besides, I did not see anything about faxing in a copy of your birth certificate did you?

I don't think you understand my point, but that's the last I'll post on this. The point is not that people are getting away from situations, etc. The point is that many people feel ties to more than one country. I think that's something that's a lot easier to understand if you lived in a lot of different countries. You are obviously free to disagree, but I just wanted to state my $.02.

Oich, I think the lawyer in you is coming out.

I was born in Germany, raisied in England and live in America.

If you where born in Iceland and want to play for them, then go for it, if you lived in America and want to play with them, then go for that.

This is a game, a fun thing to learn from.

PS, I went with the German team and have talked with, discussed, critiqued, learnt from every single one of them. They are truly priceless to me as they each have their own styles and editing tips. You will learn so much, but do chill!
