I'm really hoping people will take the time after the challenge to read how the photo was made. because I think that's where it's going wrong here. plus the postage stamp size of 640...

so here's the shot I took. I would really like to know why this ended up so low. (I'm not ranting or complaining, just curious)

I think in the five seconds (being generous here for many voters) that people view images during voting, they didn't see the multiple layers of coolness presented here. I think your scores suffered because too much was going on - you have a cool plant, some cool bubbles, the cool plant poking a cool bubble, a set of reflections, etc. The problem with the shot for DPC is that too much is going on. You commented that you wanted to create an IreneM type shot...I think you did a nice job of a still life with good lighting, but the thing that really separates Irene's shots are the simplicity of the image. Focusing on the bubble or the plant alone, or focusing on the interaction of the plant with the bubble as a close up macro type shot would may have come across more DPC friendly.

Personally, I think it is a fine shot and one I would have easily given a 7 or better, but I tend to linger on shots during voting....

I gave this an 8, so I really can't help you with your question. Perhaps it is a bit dark for some people? Not sure. I thought it was very clear and fit the challenge well.

The IreneM comment was that I wanted to do that in first instance (simple and with some drops of water on the purple 'hairs' of the flower), but I decided to do something else :-)

Maybe I should've cropped the reflection out, but that was such a part of my intentions with the shot I decided to leave it there.

I left a comment but I would like to add this. The more time we spend on a setup the more we want it to do well. We think by sacrificing more time our photo will improve but sometimes it's the opposite that occurs. I've scrapped a few setups I have created after working on them for hours. I don't want to because of the time invested already but I now know that it's the right decision when the time arrives. I know in this shot it took time for you to get the bubbles in place though, that's not what I mean. Sometimes an idea is great in my head but when it comes to reproducing it, it fails miserably. So I have learned to move on rather than spending too much time on an idea.

Not saying this shot was a bad idea, it was great. Just too much info in it I think.
