I think it would be creepy is anyone held on to all those dolls for an extended period of time.

Main Entry: pup·pet
Function: noun
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: Middle English popet youth, doll, from Middle French poupette, diminutive of *poupe doll, from Vulgar Latin *puppa, alteration of Latin pupa
Date: 1538
1 a: a small-scale figure (as of a person or animal) usually with a cloth body and hollow head that fits over and is moved by the hand b: marionette
2: doll 1

So I wonder if this would work, being a puppet, or if it's not obvious enough because the hand up him is not clearly visible?

I would say action figures are dolls. They have to call them action figures because no boy ever wants to play with dolls. However, I would want a few more yes votes prior to taking a photo. And even then I'd expect some DNMC votes!

PS: My 7 year old and I were playing with about 50 Star Wars action figures last night!

I agree with you. But that's only one vote.

OK people I am new here and what I seeing is that becuz of a lack of detailed explainatory parametres in individual challenges artistic license is allowed in interpretation of the Challenge title...WRONG!!
by the commentary I am getting on my first attempt...but just thot I would throw that out there
I KNOW i wouldnt be happy if i fit the mould anyways...cheers!

Artistic interpretation is certainly allowed. You cannot get your entry disqualified for not meeting a challenge topic. That is a very subjective thing. The viewers perception is also very subjective and sometimes an entry meets the topic, but not in the way most voters view it. One of my own entries is currently getting beat up in voting for probably the same reason as yours. I entered it knowing it would probably do poorly and that it would only hit the target with a smaller percentage of the voters.

We do have some things on this site to recognize out of the box approaches to a subject.

so I'm taking it then, that the Challenge title is a ruff guideline only, and submit at will to public opinion...which i am fine with...obviously anyone here for scores alone is apt to be disappointed, happily that aint me!!
It just seemed to me there are many who take the title extremely literally...which makes for bad art in my opinion..
thanx for ur input btw...

Yup.

Yup again.

On the other hand, there are folks that will attempt to enter any old photo into the current challenge when they don't have one that really fits, so public opinion provides some balances. Sometimes artistic license backfires if the topic can be interpreted several ways.

Edited to add: However, when it is your own photo that is the "any old photo that doesn't really fit" you feel it did indeed fit the topic and the others just didn't get it.

I'm having a bit of a dilemma with the Dolls and Puppets challenge, mostly because in my couple of months since joining DPchallenge, I've seen what the voters like and what they seem not to like.

I've taken a photo for it which personally, I very much like and would like to share. Only thing is, it isn't what the DP community tends to like (from my experience thus far) so I'd pretty much be setting myself up for the bottom rung position on the ladder, I believe.

I'm not quite sure what to do; submit it because I really like it and possibly subject myself to having a lot of people burst my bubble, or leave it out and submit a different photo I think the DPers would like more, even if it doesn't 'pop' as much for me personally.

Argh.

May I suggest one way out?

Ask yourself what is more important for you:

[1] A creation that you like and that gives you pleasure when you look at it,

OR,

[2] The thrill that a 100 endorsements would give you for a creation that you dont like as much.

Thrill in a moment, or awe in a spirit? :-)

On the other hand, being here on DPC is surely a proof of the approval we need from kins or fellows.. it feels great if others appreciate our work. But nothing would beat the feeling when fellows also like what you liked. That would be rare I guess.. not everyone would like the same thing IMHO.

As for me, I would prefer these three in this order:

(a) make all of us happy (my picture is what I loved and others may like too)
(b) make myself happy (my picture is what I loved)
(c) make others happy (my picture is what others may love)

However, this is not what happens in reality, since I cant predict what others would like.. and even if I did, I wouldnt change my core likings for that. So in reality, it is going be more like this (in that order):

(a) make myself happy (my picture is what I loved, I dont know about others, why speculate?)
(b) make all of us happy (my picture is what I loved and others may like too, but I dont know about others)
(c) make others happy (my picture is what others may love based on a guess.. this would be to get a thrill one gets from a mass support)
