I am in morning as today things went totally wrong. My family are visiting and have been having a wonderful time together. We were about to go for a drive, and I changed my battery and also cleared my memory card.

I placed my Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT camera on the table but did not notice that the strap was hanging over the side.

I then picked up my tripod to fold in the legs to fit into the car, but it slipped out on my hands, and fell to the floor.

I did not realize that part of the tripod got caught in my camera strap, and the tripod pulled my camera off the table, and on to the floor.

The distance it fell was less than two feet, but the damage was done, as nothing came on when I turned it on to check if it was ok. The digital screen was BLANK. I am devastated, as I tried and checked everything, but it is broken.

I now will have no camera for 6 to 8 weeks, or even longer, as it will have to be sent to Canon in Sydney for a quote for repairs, and hopefully fixable. This is a time when I only wish I has a second back up camera, but I do not have one. I am going to be so sad and so empty without my Canon.

Thank goodness my family were here to support me, and to see that it was a freak accident. They were as shocked as I was, that such a little fall caused the damaged, but it definitely does not work.

I am a very sad girl tonight.....

I feel like I have lost my BEST friend.

Shez,

My heart goes out to you. My 300D died last year suddenly and I was crushed and shocked.

Firstly - does your home insurance cover this? Best to check you may be in for a nice surprise. Mine was covered and I ended up doing a deal with the insurance company - they were willing to replace my 300D with a 400D but were happy for me to pay the extra and I ended up with a FABULOUS 30D!

So out of rotten luck, great things can happen!

I'm hoping your insurance is good for it - if not, mayby some other piece of fortune will smile on you.

Meanwhile what lens was on it and is the lens ok?

That is truely sad news Shez, sorry this has happened. It might be worth having a look at used bodies, sometimes you can pick up a used deal cheaper than having the old girl fixed up.

I hope it works out for you. x

Yes Lisa, I thank you for your concern and yes, I was afraid someone would ask about the lens, as I am uncertain if it has been damaged as well. I only hope it hasn't, but will send it away with the camera to have them both checked.

Thank goodness my VERY BEST EXPENSIVE Canon Lens, theCanon 180mm Macro lens WAS NOT on my camera, as I had just changed it to my other BEST Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. I LOVE this lens and only hope it has not been damaged as well. I am really upset about this, and need to go and have another good cry.....

I am hoping I am covered with insurance, but will not know for two days when I ring them on Monday.

Oh the pain...the pain.

I just had that happen with my Powershot. My son knocked it off the microwave. Though it was been dropped(several times, it always turned back on.

Now I am without a smaller camera. The pain was, and is, still huge. So I couldn't even imagine dropping my SLR.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and hope you get good news.

Shez, Have you tried powering off, removing the battery, lens, and card, allowed to wait 5 or so minutes, put battery back in, wait a couple more minutes, power on. You know some of us older folk need a gentle wakening after a spill..

Oh, Shez, I am so sorry for you. Thank god you'd switched lenses so the $$$ one didn't take the fall too. Hope the Sydney repair crew can help.

Sad news indeed Shez. Ask them for a loaner, you never know. It may be of a lesser camera but it'll keep you busy.

Ouch. I can feel that.

I'm REALLY sorry, Shez.

Oh NO!!! That's just not good, Shez. Do as Lisa suggests - when you can, call your insurance and see what they cover. You've had that Rebel for a good long time, and if they'll replace it, it may be time for a new body anyway. With luck, the lens is fine - it should be. I hope you find a solution soon - not only do I hate for you to be without a camera (as with most of us, it's a BIG part of every day life) but we'll miss your pictures. Keep us informed! And hugs!!!

I'm so sorry Shez...but it may be a good thing to have a backup camera if possible...when I purchased my 5D, I was going to trade in my 20d but couldn't get much for it; so I did keep it as a spare...think about getting a used 20D if possible...it's a great camera, they are pretty cheap now, and in case of an accident you have a backup ready..I know how you feel; I would go crazy!

What a disaster Shez !!!! I am sorrier than I can say- hopefully you will soon be back in business...

My kids laugh about all of my paranoia when it comes to the treatment of my cameras. One of my huge pet peeves is we never leave a strap dangling over the edge of something.... and now I can tell them my paranoia is well placed!

So sorry about the crash. I hope you are back up & running soon.

Hey Shez, very sorry to hear about your troubles. :( Did you take the lens off the camera after the incident? You might want to try that. Do it over a plastic sheet as I suspect a few parts may fall out. The lens to camera interface is the weakest link in the camera system. And don't worry about the repair. I hear that Canon can fix just about any problem except burning the sucker up! Good luck.

Shez - I am so sorry to hear about your cameras demise - I am sure hope it can be repaired quickly. I agree with earlier posts about checking on your insurance. In the US, most drops of cameras in the home are covered with standard home insurance.

Sorry to hear about your loss. As you work your way through the various levels of grief, several thoughts come to mind. From my grandfather, out of every tragedy comes an opportunity; Two from a couple of old friends, if you fall, fall forward; and, your never to young to learn. My thought, what an opportunity to buy a new camera.

Ooooooh, Shez. That's awful. I second everything that Melethia says. I'd go even a little further and say that even if the insurance doesn't cover it, if you can, just go out and get a new body. A camera is such a part of your life and you get so much pleasure out of your photography that I hate to think of you going cold turkey for two months.

P.S. Could you get one of those fairly inexpensive P&S's to tide you over? Some of them take incredible pictures.

I'd view this as a sign from heaven that it's time to upgrade!!! ;-)

Truthfully, that's how I got a 5D ... my 20D died on me, within 30 minutes I had a 5D in my hands because ... the show must go on!

Shez, I am so sorry for your troubles.....hope your homeowners' insurance will help.

Good advice about throwing in a couple dollars towards an upgrade......kind of a sliver lining to the cloud should insurance help out.

Are you near to a major metro area?

You may find that though a loaner may not be available, you may be able to rent something.

Have hope, dear lady, things have a way of working out for truly good people such as you!

Hang in there!

Shez, I am so sorry for your bad luck! I don't have any advice other than, that I believe in "signs"... Maybe it is time for a replacement.

Ahh, life has a way of presenting us with opportunities when we least expect them. Good luck in your quest for a replacement.
