I was watching the Olympics, diving was on. Right after a dive, they showed still image, a composite, of the diver. The composite consisted of the dive in its entirety, starting from the platform, through the flips and into the water. I've also seen this done with extreme sports.

I'm guessing one would set their camera to continuous and just make a composite out of all the images.

What is this kind of photo called? Can anyone post any tips or links to tutorials?

Time Lapse -

Several images of the same scene showing an action sequence. Formed by layering the individual photos over one another and hiding all except for the relevant change in sequence.

yup shoot the shoot in manual so that you exposure stays the same. (from a tripod)
take as many shots desired
get a big drink and some tunes
Open them in photoshop
layer them.
and start masking out the parts you don't need in each layer.

All from the same location and time frame...although the last 3 are closer to sunset, obviously. No the rainbow was not added in.

Is there automatic tool for this in PS? I'm using GIMP, but I'm not *that* familiar with the layers yet that I would know. But as a programmer I started immediately figuring out ways to automate this. :) Obviously they have something like that on TV, as they show those images right after the jump etc? Perhaps manual labour gives better results, but anyway...

Wow! Perfect all! exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the quick response.

Thinking of going to the local skate park to try this out, if I ever get one to look good, I'll post it here.

Gorgeous shots! How do you keep everything so sharp, even with using a tripod? Did you use a remote?

These were all handheld using continuous shooting.

dunno ask MAK he shot it.... Doubt its HDR though seeing as how he couldn't have bracketed THAT fast. lol He could have done it from one hdr but i don't think so
