It really would be nice if when someone posts a comment and the person recieving the comment replies back the person would as well respond. I'm trying to better myself by being in this thing but whenever someone comments and I reply I never get an answer from the commentor.....with the exception of one person.

Are you replying to comments that are given to you during a challenge? It is generally considered bad form here at DPC to reply to comments that are given during a challenge. Waiting until after the challenge to make the comments back to commenters is fine and dandy and much appreciated by many who comment.

and why is that? What is the point of receiving comments if someone does not want expansion on comments?
08/21/2008 06:53:22 PM · #4
Forums are a better place for a "discussion" to take place. Many people (myself included) don't go back looking for responses to comments on photos.

doesn't it show up in your email when you send someone a message regarding a comment and if you wait until that challenge is over how the hell do you learn to improve the challenge you are currently in.....?

If you reply to a comment during a challenge you give up your anonymity and thats not good practice.

huh?? Once you're in, you're in. You can't act on any comments to improve your photo that is currently in voting.

why is that cuz someone is going to sabatoge you isch what is wrong with giving up whom you are.....are we holding things against each other and not being objective?

not on the one you are in but the one that is currently being held if you have to wait an entire week to fix stuff for the one followoing you are giving up 7 days and to me seven days are precious when I'm learning to improve myself I don't have aminute to waste let alone 7 days

Ehhhm, do you want to write to commenters to explain them things about your image in the hope that they improve the rating they have given you? This is exactly what should not happen... And if you lecture commenters this is more likely to hurt your score I would guess.

So there is no way to "improve" during a challenge. Learn from the comments and improve for the next challenge. And if you'd like to get in touch with voters for a follow-up do so after the challenge is over.

EDIT: Just spotted your comment right above. Let me add something: Don't be in such a hurry, it takes time. ;-)

Now I am totally lost on what you are talking about.

But let me just put it this way:

You take a photo, edit it, enter it in a challenge before the deadline.
Your image is now in voting - you will receive comments, some good, some bad, some useful, some not.
At the end of the challenge, you will see what your final score is and where you placed.
If you want to learn how to improve, you take ALL your comments into consideration, along with the score and your placement and you should be able to gleen something useful from all that to improve on your next challenge. If not, post a thread in the forums (after the challenge voting is over) along with a thumbnail of your pic and ask (nicely) for some feedback on how to improve.

Hope that helps.

guess I was unaware that someone can change their vote after they voted and yes I can improve in a minute......lol maybe someone should post the unwritten codes so they are written for the newbies who come trying to improve themselves =0) I have three kids in college I've had a lifetime of waiting I have no time to wait I want to know it all!=0)

Ok, now I am picturing you on some sort of life support machine that is directly hooked up to your DPC scoring average and only a high average will sustain your life. Is this the case?

Patti, chill out a little. I'm away now until Tuesday but if you ever want to ping a shot of yours over to me for constructive feedback before a challenge enters voting I'd be happy to help out (I never vote on a picture I have knowledge of).

Take a breath, your going love this site and in time will grow ;)

during the challenge you can also view what your current score is......for example most weeks I watch myself go way down fast t his week for some lucky reason and maybe because I'm trying to think the way you all do it has barely gone down......I understand a lot of what I get nicked off for but if someone leaves me a comment I'd like to use that knowledge....for example today I had a comment (and you can all look me up look at my shit and it won't bother me a bit) that said I needed to learn about compesition to make my pictures better but I thought I'd addressed that and would like to know what they saw to make them say that so I could work to see how others see things through my lense.......get it? And yes I have until tuesday to deposit my picture so if I can learn from what I did last week to improve this weeks picture while it is being critiqued I'm ahead of the game.......

Why not come into the forums area and ask for some points on photographic composition? That way you can get a lot more feedback than from one person.

It is better than coming in and getting upset because someone left you a useful comment and then you are upset that they won't respond to an emal.

and I love the expression "ping"

see know how much the few of you have taught me in just a few short minutes that is all I'm asking for

Just my own

I will sometimes respond to a comment during a challenge, but only to explain something they may have inquired about. I do it in a conversational manner, and thank them for their commenting efforts. I never intend to try to make the person change their vote and to my knowledge nobody ever has. Once someone has cast their vote, it is cast. I also do not change my own vote if messaged in response to a comment.
