I started this in response to a pm about the telephone-call thread, but decided to put it here instead because I'm curious about others' opinions on it as well :)

Yeah, I really believe in a sixth sense. Maybe it's a remnant connected to "instinct" or "racial memory" like animals still have? I think we're born with it to some extent, just as we are the other five, but most lose it when we're still young, since it's weak and we don't or can't develop and strengthen it.
How often have you seen or heard of small children knowing things they just couldn't have known otherwise? And are all "invisible friends" really imaginary?

The story I used about the telephone was just one example of my link with this one person. There are stronger, more inexplicable ones that I just can NOT dismiss as coincidence. She's the only person that I can recognise a connection with, though there was one scary incident with my brother.

I have no control over the sense but I definitely believe it's there. What do you think?

I feel there maybe a sixth sense. I base my decision on my own experiences. I can't explain them but there has at least been 3 or more times and the details was to accurate to be by chance or the mind relating the incidences. My experience have ranged from localized to global events. Plus I don't speak Spanish nor have I ever taken a Spanish class and do not have any Spanish speaking friends or relatives near me but I sometime in my sleep I will have a conversation in Spanish. Real words, complete sentences with no hesitation.

Dunno... I've been accused of having no sense at all, a time or two. ;-)

Reminds me of a debate I once had with an avid disbeliever of seeing the future. He felt is was all coincidence. My position was that even if we gave him the point, it would also follow that there would be a bell curve and some people right more often than others. And, that just like the monkeys randomly pecking at typewriters, eventually a person would come along and hit every prediction correct. Which was also accepted.

At this point the question becomes, how would we be able to tell that this was not that one person who by chance got it all right? And, since the person is always right, would it really matter why they were right?

I can tell you this. My son went to Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 with the 10th Mountain Division. My wife awoke one night, in the wee hours, and said she heard our son screaming for her and that he was in terrible trouble, and she could see him falling as if from the clouds or sky. She was really upset and said it felt quite real. The next few days were tense, as we wondered if we would receive
"the visit".

Our son came home about 45 days later. We were talking about his experiences, and at one point we were talking about bad days. He got a little quiet and said, "My worst day is when they shot down the chopper I was in. It was terrifying, the pilot lost control, the chopper was on fire, and we were dropping like a rock." He continued, "I have to say I started screaming like a baby for my mother..."

We had not mentioned my wife's experience to him. When they compared notes, it was the same day. The were unable to pinpoint the exact time to see if the times coincided. As for me, being a typical dad, I didn't notice a thing.

So... Sixth sense, that pops up at times. Or, random chance? How do we tell, and does it really matter?

I know what I believe. The rest of the world can believe as they wish.

Sounds like she did get the signal! I wish you would have kept the "date" of her dream and compared.

I'll spare you some of the mundane stories of my "6th sense" but...you can believe this or not:

One morning I awoke from a dream. In the dream a huge passenger aircraft landed on my street and was slowing rolling past my front door. I could see all the people with their head turned towards me. As the plane went by they kept looking at me and even turned to look "over their left shoulder" as the plane slowly went by. They were just staring. Not scared not happy...just no expression.

I could see them clearly because the top of the plane was missing all the way down to the seats.

I didn't think anything about it because I lived 5 miles from the airport and can hear planes fly by all the time. I just related the dream to the fact that I live near an airport.

I got out of bed...did my morning routine...got in my car to go to work.

I turned on the radio about half way to work and heard the report of the first plane flying into the World Trade Center. This was about 2 hours after I awoke from my dream.

Like I said...you can believe it or not. I know I would have a hard time believing it myself.

I think you use your sixth sense every time you press the shutter release.

I believe in a sixth sense. The summer before my fist semester of college I was at home and my boyfriend, who is now my husband worked odd hours, sometimes overnight, in the town near us. I woke up one morning feeling sick as if something was wrong. My mother also woke up. She kept saying someone was coming and laid out a blanket and pillow on the couch and waited up looking out the window. She also felt sick. That was about five thirty that morning. Around six I get a call from my boyfriend saying he was in a severe accident. He fell asleep at the wheel and rammed a vehicle that was preparing to turn off the road. He assured that he was okay, cracked a rib and was very sore, but okay. But what was wierd was what he said after. He said that he originally felt too tired to continue driving so started to turn down my road to ask my parents to sleep at the house before continuing on home. It was about 5:30 that morning. He then changed his mind and decided not to wake any of us up.

Another incident was when my grandmother was in a nursing home. This also happened that summer. I visited her with my boyfriend. She was always a major part of my life and had promised to be a part of my wedding. That was always the last thing she would say during visits. Even during the times she forgot who I was she would ask, "How long till Louise gets married?" It would break my heart. After one particular visit I went back in and hugged her, I told her it was okay to let go and that she'll be there in my heart, then brushed her hair like she liked and left. The very next morning we get a call that she passed in her sleep during the night.

The last time it happened was when I was pregnant with my daughter. I kept feeling sick and strained and I wanted to cry all day. I kept telling my husband that something was wrong somewhere, so we started calling our family. The last number we got to was my brother and his wife was just admitted to the hospital and their baby was dieing. He hadn't even told the family yet.

So yes, I believe in a sixth sense.

I used to speak cambodian with my friends mom in my sleep. She always thought it was funny. They were cambodian.

I believe that sixth sense is the strings that connect people that we love to our hearts. When something bad happens to them the strings get pulled. Hope that makes sence.

im not sure this is completely connected to the sixth sense im sure we all have, but... ok well im pretty sure a few spirits live in my house from various experiences my mom and i hav had. i woke up two nights ago for no aparent reason to see this blown glass jellyfish i have flying off my shelf. i wated it sumersault in mid air, only to land on my dresser unharmed. i was kinda like, ok that was special, and went back to sleep. i woke up the next morning and the jellyfish was still on my dresser, so i couldn't have dreamed it. this type of thing seems to happen alot at my house

We did compare dates, and they matched. Given the time difference it was approximately the same time. (Would have been about the right time of day.) But we did not have the exact hour or minute to see if it matched exactly. I wrote the date down in my PDA, as I am curious about those things, and thought I would ask him if something has happened while he was there. I figured either way it would be interesting. Either a ooowwweee spooky moment, which it was, or an over worried Mommie moment; which it looks like it was not.

I know I've had a couple of prophetic dreams. When I was in high school (years ago now) I dreamed about a certain girl I didn't know well coming into class wearing a cast on her foot. The next day at school it happened, and there had been no way for me to know or hear that she'd been injured the night before.

Over the years there have been a couple of other similar incidents with my dreams. My mom has also occasionally had seemingly odd, random dreams that come true soon after. Luckily, however, most of my dreams are NOT prophetic.

I fully and freely accept that things happen that I cannot explain, be they prescience, knowing things I cannot possibly know, precognition, whatever.

I do know that there have been instances, which creeped out my customers sometimes, that I just *knew* what was wrong with their car with *NO* explanation whatsoever why I knew.

I also know from a fantastic 30 year relationship with a woman I know to be my soul mate that communication without speaking is very real.

Life is cool!

When the kids were little we'd taken them to a park for the day. On the way home I was relaxed and happy, everything was good. We lived on a very short street; it took maybe 30 seconds from turning on until parked in our driveway, but in that time I was suddenly overcome with uncontrollable sleepiness, so much so that hubby had to help me out of the car, upstairs and into bed. Otherwise I'd have just slept in the car. I recall, as I stumbled up the stairs, being vaguely frightened by the power and suddenness of the exhaustion but unable to fight it.

I slept about 3 hours and when I woke and went downstairs hubby had a phone message for me. My brother had killed himself.

He died of carbon monoxide poisoning and when I had time later to piece things together I realised that he would have been falling asleep for his last time at just the time that I was overcome....

I don't know if I would call this a sixth sense, but here is what usually happens to me.

Once in a while (maybe once every 4 to 6 months), I get a very strong sense of deja-vu and can often relate the situation to a very vivid dream I had in the past.

That's about it.

No, there is no "sixth sense".

Absolutely yes! It happens to me quite frequently!
The most common manifestion is the feeling of "being watched", only to realize there is actually someone watching you!

I don't believe we can foretell the future, but I DO believe there's some sort of vibes or something that we sometimes pick up on. Kinda like picking up stray radio signals on other equipment?
Some of us are only tuned to certain people, some can pick up only very strong signals from others, some only pick up stray bits and don't even recognise them as such. Why not?

Why are some people color blind? Why are some people deaf? Those who have not experienced it, tend to doubt. Those who have, tend to believe.

In the end, is it real and the doubters wrong, or only a coincidence and just our imaginations? Some will never be convinced, and others never dissuaded. People come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and beliefs. Isn't life grand?!!!

Many, many, many things happen to you in life and to others as well. And sometimes they have something in common (of course, it's what you'd expect).

And with hindsight you can then attribute meaning to them.

If you think that a "sixth sense" exists that allows you to perceive information usually not available to people you could easily test its predictive power.

This would be very interesting and a major breakthrough in science. We would have to completely revise our understanding of the world. (Oh and by the way, Randi would give you $1,000,000 for just a little demonstration, you don't even have to explain anyting, just show it to him.)
