RE: "Expert Editing" - call it "Liberal Editing" and change "Minimal Editing" to "Strict Photo-Nazi Purist Non-Editing" :)

...oh yeah, and horsehockey is not legal, even under Advanced Editing.

I don't know if you're being serious or not but I've seen others mention their problem with calling it "Expert Editing". I don't get it. It DOES require more expertise in editing and or in-camera techniques in order to stand out in the challenge.

I'm sorry...but how is using an overlay more digital art than using some of this HDR software that seems to be so popular? How about all these crazy over saturated and unrealistically colored landscapes? How about extreme dodging and burning? Where's the line?

...photography evolves, as should the way we look at it. Everyone has their preferences, vote accordingly.

LOL. Actually I think Minimal Editing should be "Strict Photo-Nazi Purist, Who Fool Themselves into Thinking Their Images aren't Edited, Non-Editing". :P

These comments sounded sensible:

Kirbic - 09/08/2007 12:11:26 PM - Textures are a horse of a different color; they are allowed even in Advanced. They *may* be based on something photographic, or they may not. If they are, they need not be shot during the challenge timeframe. The limitation on textures is that they cannot add a feature to the scene that one would assume is part of the as-photographed scene.

Scalvert - 04/05/2007 12:36:58 AM - You can use any existing image as a texture (which is essentially what Photoshop's texture filter does) as long as it obviously functions as a texture. You cannot, for example, add a layer of discreet objects and call that a "texture," but something like wood grain or grunge would be fine.

Nice find! Very sensible indeed.

I have to agree with Rachel ( RKT. There is even a Texture Library so why can't we use it? If we want to do something in "expert" or whatever you want to call it,using a separate layer, then put it in that gallery. The whole problem with digital photography is that IT IS DIGITAL which gives us the capabilities of using it in a creative way. It was done in the darkroom, so why not here? Yes, it is a different format but we can still have rules. I say HERE HERE to textures and layers and even like what MAK said about Members A and B. You don't have to like my stuff, but more of it has layers lately than not. I don't always post the texture/grunge layer that I used, but if you want me to put it in the gallery so that it is legal, I have no problem with that. Many I obtain from copyright free locations and I don't always make them myself. I'd be happy with one challenge per month like that. :~)

why not just add (digital art) and let the chips fall where they may?

Keep textures out of advanced editing, but perhaps have occasional challenges which specifically allow or even mandate use of textures.

I think that is a great idea. Like a once a month "wham bam thank you ma'am" challenge. LOL

My name is Michael surfinbird and I use overlays.

I have recently joined a small thread click here where other addicts can practice their craft in safety and with out pointing fingers from purists, and photographers who are just much better than me - there are lots of you out there!

I like the idea of being able to use layers, but under an appropriate and specific rule set. Once a month or fortnightly works for me.

Or maybe allow them in the monthly Free Studies?

Occasionally maybe but not in all of them.

Why not? It just once a month.

Every free study? Maybe if we have a choice of free studies. Kind of like the exclusive open challenges.

But you would have a choice (i.e. use textures or don't).

Then what's the point?

Not sure I follow. Aren't you trying to make a point about lack of choice if textures are allowed in the monthly free studies? I just said, that you would have the choice to either use it or not. I don't think anybody is mandating the use of textures.

I'm on the fence. I like the effect that it can give. I have only recently gotten the hang of layers and would love the chance to try some of these treatments out in a challenge. It can however, cross the line into being digital art. I agree with those who suggested that we need an "extreme editing" category, that includes some of the tricks like this, or multiple exposure merges.

I wonder if an occasional full fledged 'Shopping challenge (I hate to call it "Photoshopping" as I am a PSP user) might be fun. Not often enough to change the focus of this site, but no holds barred when one does come up. Any editing tricks go.

I used to play around on Worth 1000, which is primarily a photoshopping site. A lot of fun stuff there. They do have photography contests, but I really didn't like the complexity of their points system.

Well, that's not really the point. It's like changing all challenges to expert editing and saying well you don't have to use expert editing.

It's about accepting the fact that not everyone on the site agrees with the allowance of textures as with expert editing so to keep the site open to ALL users of the site there needs to be a choice of challenges.

I'm definitely in THIS camp. Even if you're going to call it digital art, it still originates in photography, and there is certainly a place for it. More and more my photography leans towards digital art, but that doesn't negate the fact that it IS photography.

I'm thinking more freedom and less restrictions. Basic ruleset is already in place for the purists.

I like this idea...but maybe we can take it a bit further...by making people use their noggins and be more creative...soooo.....alternate the Texture Editing challenges to include a challenge with just 'in camera' texture layers....and the next challenge be only processing added texture layers.

Examples -

In Camera Texture layers -

In Processing Texture layers -

Leave advanced the way it is,

BUT

Add another challenge for those who want to lean more towards digital art but don't want to go as far as expert.

Once a month, why not. Just don't replace the current challenges.
