Is there a cult, religion or other reason for a family (mom, dad 2 kids) to wear all black all the time? Well, they do wear some white sometimes too (like maybe a vest), but never any color. They also have two big SUV’s, all black, even with blacked out tail and head lights! Maybe they just really like black?

Any thoughts?

And yes, I have talked to them, but I don't have the type of relationship with them where I could come out and ask "what's up with the all black thing?"

In the absence of light the smallest flicker is a beacon.

To Wyrdling, I do not believe he said he minded at all. He simply noticed something and was curious about the reason behind it. It is human nature to be curious.

I'm sure there is a reason, people don't do anything without some sort of motivation. Black is a difficult fabric color too, hard to wash and shows lint, it certainly isn't simple. Gray would probably be the simplest color.

LoudDog, you could simply try saying "I couldn't help but notice the likeness of your clothing." and hope it sparks a conversation. :)

In some places it is, it is like window tinting and the color or light still comes through although not as brightly.

Perhaps they're in mourning?

Without seeing the clothes, what comes to mind is that they could be Old Order Mennonites, which is branch of the Mennonite faith. It's very common for them to drive all black vehichles, including black wheels and bumpers.

From the Wikipedia article: "Other aspects of Old Order Mennonite life are concerned with plainness. The concept of plainness dictates the distinctive dress of the Mennonite. ... Some groups that allow ownership of cars require that they be black with no chrome or other decoration."

I suppose I did jump to a conclusion on that one - sorry about that (to the OP).

Can't speak to why anyone else would do that, but, most of the time, I wear black, and I also drive a black car. My business colors are black and white. I have always, (and I mean from the age of about 3) I always wanted black clothes, loved black cars, and only wanted black horses.

When I was "very" young, my mother forbid my grandmothers from buying black clothes for me because she didn't like it. Haha! That didn't really work out over the long run! The majority of my wardrobe is black/white. Granted I do have some "colors" in there, but I rarely wear color.

I just like black, and white.

Well they could have had the same mentor my daughter has had, when we go cloths shopping her phrase is "if you can get it in black why buy it in white?" lol Black does have a slimming effect...maybe that's it.

What style of clothing are they wearing - that would be a tip-off to why they wear black all the time.

maybe they get dressed in the dark and all black is easier to match.

maybe they are colorblind and all black is easier to match.

maybe they ran into a great sale at gothsRus.

This made me laugh out loud and I had to then share this thread with my coworkers.

I knew someone years ago (a ballet dancer) who always only wore black. She wasn't into clothes, it kept things simple, is what she told me. But I remember someone else remarking behind her back that she must be a devil-worshipper, because she always wore black. I was flabbergasted that anyone would make such a wild assumption. At work, recently, we had a young techie who cut his hair short & dyed it bright pink. Behind his back, someone guessed that he did that to his hair because he must need attention. I'm forever astonished by the things people notice & the guesses they make about the reasons why people do what they do. We can only speculate based on what we already know, ao your guesses tell more about you than the other person. If you want to know, then you should politely & respectfully ask. As for me, I'm forever nervous about what people are speculating about me behind my back. I wear all black to a shoot. But to work I wear tan slacks with a white top. Different slacks, different tops but always tan/white. It makes shopping easy. It also makes laundry easy. I chose tan/white because they can be washed together. And because I hoped my clothes would be nondescript, unnoticeable, unremarkable. That's my story.

Maybe they just like the color. Maybe it keeps things simple. Maybe they're Goths. Maybe they're all color-blind. Maybe they're oblivious to the curiosity their all-black style creates, maybe not. It would be so much more eceentric if they went all-tangerine or all-lime green, which would be much more difficult & much more noticeable. Like that client on the Dog Whisperer who created an all-pink environment for herself up to and including dying her little dog pink. It's an interesting world, with interesting people in it. People are noticing more about you than you think!

I prefer black. I dont dress in all black as I always wear jeans but if you look at my closet 99 percent of my tee shirts are black. My coats and sweaters are black. My car would be black if I had the choice/money. I debate having a porfessional repaint a 70-200 so the lense would be black and match my black camera body. I just think it looks more clean and professional i guess.

I don't have any problem with it, just curious as it seems strange to me. Not so much one person, but a whole family. I see him (dad) pretty often and he always has black pants and a black t-shirt on. Same thing every time I see him. The kids are rarely out of the house and home schooled. Not weird on it's own, but when added with the all black it has people talking...

I'm thinking the sith lords think might be it. Is there a test I can run to verify without dangering myself? Would the local Jedi Council be able to help?

They're probably just transplant New Yorkers :P

New Yorkers wear black until they can find something darker.

The local branch office of the Jedi Council should be able to let you know if they feel a disturbance in the Force.
