Ok, I played around with some high ISO's tonight. Here is a picture of my daughter asleep in her crib. The room has a 20 watt bulb in a light in the back corner. I was kind of surprised at how good the image turned out.



Here is the same image but at 100%, just a crop of her face.

Wow that's really nice. Nikon are going to draw lots of attention with this model I would think. Do other Nikons compare to the D700 in sharpness at high ISO's? Is this because of a new sensor or is it due to new software algorithms?

The D3 and the D700 both have the same sensor in it and are really good at high ISO's. The sensor in the D300 is really good at higher ISO's as well, but not quite near where the FX chips are at.

I went to the presentation of the D700 at a local shop, and I was equally impressed by the quality of high ISO images. What I noticed, in particular, was that noise is really low in bright areas, but much more visible in dark areas. What's your experience?

Anyway, that's for sure a great camera.

Although I am not completely obsessed with high ISO setting, I must admit that it is very impressive indeed. Nikon did once again a very good job, at being patient when delivering the right camera at the right time. This is all good news for Nikon photographs. Now, it is clear that the printer company has no longer the monopoly.

Still, the `printer` company had the camera company on the ropes for a while.. not too shabby for a `printer company`. Once the camera companies lenses manage to catch up with those from the printer company, then they might actually be contenders. :)

Nikon make printers

Im sure canon make better cameras than nikon make printers

Haven't you learned anything from Star Wars. Sure the Light Side was great, for a time (white lenses). Then it was the Dark Sides turn, and we ruled the universe. Destroyed off the Jedi's and held them at bay for years. The real power of the force lies with us. ;)

Hopefully they can pull out some new great lenses at Photokina.

Ah but you forget the jedi's eventually come back and single handedly kick dark side butt!

That's impressive high ISO performance. I was impressed jsut going from a compact to a Rebel XT. That makes my Rebel look like a cheap compact. (Relatively speaking, I suppose it is)

I know, I saw someone saying that Nikon is the Dark Side, and Canon being the Light. Thought it was funny. (I'm such a geek.)

There is talk that the D3 and the D700 are going to change how people shoot. Wedding photographers can literally shoot an entire wedding without using using flash. Wildlife photographers will be able to get better shots in low light (which "Surprise Surpise" is when all the critters like to come out). Sports shooters will be able to use higher shutter speeds at indoor events. And for fun? Use your IPhone as a key light for portraits. That's a cool idea.

The D700 btw, is fair bit lighter than the D3 and a fair bit cheaper. I forget all the differences but the key ones that come to mind are:
- The D3 has the dual memory card slots
- the D3 uses a pentaprism rather than a mirror (which means a lot more coverage in the view finder and it will be brighter)

To me the cost is the biggest difference. You can theoretically buy a D300 AND a D700 for less than a D3.

eta: Oh yeah. The D700 has a self-cleaning sensor. Not exactly a silver bullet against all things dust but helpful nonetheless

eta2: Apparently the D700 has a pentaprism but the coverage area is smaller.

Hopefully this isn't off topic but I have a question about ISO on the D300.

Why is the lowest number 200 - then it goes L0.3, L0.7, L1.0? I get the feeling it has noise reduction software on the "L" settings.
