I thought Free Study was something that we can show off our creativty with photos. Sorry for getting to artsy on you folks. I'm all for a great photo of trees or kids, or even a flower if done right. yes I'm always learning here too. However, I'm getting marked down because something don't look natural in color yet it's used to desplict an emotion. Perhaps what I feel sometimes in voteing. I know that not all people will like my stuff perhaps hate it or love it.....but the point here is. it's free study. One time you can be creative with photos and to express your tallents or ideas....I hope that I don't get marked down any more for just (again) thinking outside a box. perhaps, I'll just step back in now and just shoot some plain old flower and get a better rateing for a blue ribbon or even shoot a nude girl, oh that will get me a high score, duh...this is almost crazy and wanting to move on somewhere else.

Could it be that people just don't like your shot?
04/02/2004 10:27:26 AM · #3
And remember... there are always other websites to compete on.

Don't take it the wrong way. People have tastes... maybe the people that have voted so far don't quite have that type of taste you are displaying. Does not mean the photo is bad...

Dustin,
Judging by your portfolio images, You have a great eye for composition and color. I would not take the scores too seriously. It is true that a lot of voters here like to see what they perceive as "natural color", and tend to vote down images that are otherwise. Too bad.

I feel the same way about my Out of place entry. It's doing fair at a 5.3, but it just baffles me how there are so many complaints about the majority of the entries being bad, I thought my "out side the box" one would do better. Maybe my mistake was that it made em think....lol

Even a nude girl can be shot poorly. Don't believe me, go over to photosig.com sometime and look at some of the nudes over there. I must admit that most I see there are pretty good (and tasteful) but some are downright bad.

Part of the free study is to show off the best shot you have taken during a given month. There are no limits on subject or anything else.

Ditto to kirbic: Your work is really nice! Don't let low scores chase you away, because there's a very wide range of voters here, and many appreciate an artsy, well-done image, even if it isn't "natural."

Dustin,I too like to 'push the envelope'on free studies and do get marked down for it. But I also get some very great comments. Don't let it get you down.

Your post is a little confusing to me. Yes, free study means you can show off your creative photos, the best of the month, inside or outside of the box, with or without filters etc. That does not mean that the images people mostly vote low in normal challenges will suddenly be appealing to those same voters. If a person doesnt like a particular subject, image, or post processing then they will vote it low no matter what the challenge is.

DPC is basically broken down into two areas. Firstly you have those that wish to show off their talent and skill in their particular style that appeals to a niche market, and occassionally spills into mainstream. The people who tend to stick to their style no matter what are usually not as engrossed in score watching. That's not to say they dont care about their score, just that they have accepted that their work does not appeal to the masses. Secondly, you have people who want to win above all else and adapts, or that actually is their style that appeals to the masses. They will occassionally change style that is a little more edgy, but mostly it's supply and demand. Of course there are also people who have yet to technically achieve what the mass population wants, but is going that way, and others who are straddling both trying to find a style.

Sometimes a niche image will ribbon, most times they do not. If you want to ribbon then give the people what they want. If you want to develop a particular style, show off your talent, etc then you cant really be too hung up with being marked down.

Of course all the above is merely my observations since I joined DPC and personal opinion, sweeping generalisation that it is.

I challenge you to shoot a winning shot that contains a nude girl.

It's not as easy as you make it sound my friend... DPC voters can be particularly tough on you when you choose that subject.

I score high photos where photographer is using light (natural or studio) and very low where software is used to change colors and fake the realistic looking of the photograph.Sorry but this is not a "Digital Art Challenge " site and who ever is confusing those 2 things will get low score from lot of us here!

I didn't vote here but this one would get 2 from me !

I really understand your point, but the rules say that hue and saturation are allowed, Digital Photo and Digital Dark Room goes togeather, digital art is much more than saturate or desaturate colors, is combine different images form a picture or some genoiuses mind to create a different and unique one.

So, is a DIGITAL photo contest, not a photo contest.

I did vote in that challenge and although it was not one of my top three picks it very well could have been. I felt it was an excellent image and deserved its placing.

I have the highest respect for both of you. You are top notch photographers, but I must respectfully disagree with you in this particular case.
