I have been lying awake in bed late into the night for the last couple weeks so incredibly excited about getting the Canon 400mm f/5.6. I felt like a kid going to Disneyland I was so excited.

It came yesterday and while I was waiting for my niece to finish art lessons at the local park, I took a few shots.

These shots are 100% crops...I am blown away.

Now, I did not do any pp except convert from RAW and crop and maybe levels. I just wanted to see how sharp this bad boy is.

I have to say this lens is much larger and much heavier than I thought. I am going to have to work out to carry this lens...

But...I LOVE IT!!

ETA: I need some tips for bird photography...focus settings, focus points, how to properly pan and how to find them in the viewfinder when in flight.

I'm VERY new to Canon (ok, SLR in general.) and have been poring over loads of lenses to buy.
Are you using something like this?

That is the one...don't let the picture fool you...it is large and in charge!

I also wanted to say to Bungler...look at the list of lenses in my profile...I am VERY happy with all of them and would encourage you to check those ones out.

Looks like you could shoot the Still Live IV subject from another country!
I'm sure armies have surrendered after having smaller bore devices pointed at them!
