Ha, great story. People are nuts.

Those people are crazy. Maybe they had some bad experiences with cameras or something? Hope that guy is alright and not too hurt about it.

Wow, if I was the dad I would have been pissed..... thats so wrong. I cant even imagine how mad I would have been to be labeled that and its my own kids.

If you're talking about this line:

One woman accused Crutchley of taking photos of children to put on the Internet and called him a pervert, he told the Mail.

"Mail" is referring to the "Daily Mail" newspaper.

LOL, that's so sad! Reminds me of a couple years ago, this man got hauled off to jail because some nosy women thought he was driving around in his car mastubating. Turned out he had a really bad case of poison ivy.

Wow! If you ever think YOU'RE having a bad day, imagine what THAT guy went through! :(

LOL! We should invite him to join DPC!! ROFL!

Attention: The following is a joke. It is intended to make the masses laugh and should not be taken seriously. It is based on truth but some of it is pure speculation. (I figured this appropriate considering the reactions of the people at the park).

He is a rubber consultant... ummmmmmmmm... hello? that has perv written allllll over it ;)

What do you expect from Fox news?

I'd been out shooting in the local park in my town and when I was getting ready to leave, was blocked-in by several Sheriff's cars, was accused of shooting inappropriate pics, and though I didn't have to show anything nor surrender my card or cam by law, co-operated and showed the Sheriffs every single picture I had taken. They gave the parents assurance nothing was out of line and I gave some cards to the Sheriffs to give to the parents if they wanted any of the pics.

It was this day:

Still sucks that I was accused.

Had a parent once come give me the third degree about similar and I thanked him for his concerns over the kids.
I sent him copies of the pics of his daughter:

But the day anyone gives me any shit over taking pics of my own kids will be a day they likely won't forget.

To be honest, if someone was taking pictures of their kids, I wouldnt be bothered, but if a stranger was in a park taking pictures of my kids, then I would probably say somthing, at the very least ask what he was upto..

The same thing I always do--an accurate news article. And that's what they gave us. You want to get political about this topic? Surely you can pick a better fight than that...

I wonder how many actual perverts get arrested for photographing children "inappropriately" at a park? I don't even know what that means.

On the slightly more serious side, I've often thought about this when I've been out taking pictures at the park, at the beach, etc. I did a whole month of candid shots for the May side challenge, and the first couple of weeks I was really worried that someone would catch me and freak out.
At the beach it's even worse. If I'm shooting surfers or skim boarders I keep my camera lowered until I'm ready to use it.

I may be paranoid, but the last thing I need is somebody throwing my camera into the ocean or calling the cops. My memory card would certainly show what I was there to shoot, but still...

Edited to Add: based on the responses that showed up while I was typing this, my concerns might be legit.

Actually, a more pertinent question is 'What do you expect from the Daily Mail?' - who will inevitably have represented this story in the most sensationalist possible fashion.

i must say i'm finding it more difficult to want to take pictures of kids, especially
ones i dont know.. these days.
i would NOT want anyone taking pics of mine.

this is the very reason I wont bring my camera anywhere near a playground, with or without my son. Too many paranoid wackos out there that are way to egar to make someone look like a criminal.

I was at an inner city park about a year and a half ago and had the cops called on me. Theres some homes that back on to the park and some over paranoid whacked out house wife tried to say that I was taking pictures of her in her home. weird thing is, is there is a fairly large lake between the homes and where I was shooting. Prob about 500m across the lake to the other shore. Anyway the cops stopped me as I walked out of the park, both them and I were polite the entire time and I volunteered to show them the photos that I took that day all of which the camera was pointed in the opposite direction from the houses and 99% of the shots were of some Deer that I was following and a couple plant shots. The police thanked me for showing the pics and left to go talk to the wacko.

It all worked out but was unnerving being stopped in public feeling like a criminal, guess I should have turned the tables and sued her for mental anguish :P

I just love this life, filled with so much fun! Speaking of that I don't believe I have ever explained to anyone here how I came to be here in the first place. I found myself pretty hungry and it was the only place open at four in the morning...

"Hi can I get an order of life?"
"Would you like fries with that?"
"No, but can you please hold the idiots and paranoids, I get a rash."
"I'm sorry sir it comes premade, I can like scrap some off but you will still taste it probably, and get a, rash. You still want it?"
"No, can I get an order of afterlife instead?"
"I'm sorry sir, you need to order life first before you qualify to order afterlife."
"Ok ok, nevermind I'm leaving."
"I'm sorry sir but you cannot leave until you order something."
"Seriously? Ok, I'll have a cheeseburger!"
"I'm sorry sir, we are out of cheese, would you like a plain hamburger?"
"Yes fine yes!"
"I'm sorry sir we are out of hamburger also. We have life, fries, and soda."
"Ok, some fries then!"
"Fries come automatically with an order of life."
"No, just the fries."
"I'm sorry, the fries are not priced individually, you need to order them with life and a soda."
"Let me guess, I can't buy a soda?"
"Of course you can, as part of a combo."
"Fine, give me an order of life, with fries, with a coke!"
"Alright sir one moment please..."
*splat*
"I'm sorry sir, I dropped your order and it is the last one. Do you still want it?"
"Do I have a choice?"
"Not really sir, I'm very sorry."
"Fine, just hurry up, I'm almost a year old already."
"Would you like extra idiot and paranoid sauce with that?"
"What? No! Who would want that?"
"Sorry sir, they make us ask."
"Ok, I ordered a stupid life. Can I please order an afterlife now?"
"Yes, of course. I need your offer code first."
"Offer code? I don't think I have one of those."
"I'm sorry sir, you get one of those by finishing your order of life, we will mail you an index card that you fill out about your preferred religion, any fruit you will be importing, etc. mail it back and you will get your offer code in 4 to 6 weeks, then just visit us again and you can order afterlife."
"Fruit? What are you talking about?"
"I'm sorry sir, it will all be clear once you are at the end of your life."
"Fine fine, gah I have to eat all this?"
"Well no, sir, if you wish to waste your life and throw it away you can but don't expect any discounts."

So this is how I came to be here in a world where photographs are evil, what are all your stories? I didn't see anyone else in the restaurant while I was waiting...

A lot of taking candids is how you present yourself and if you look and act confident in regards to what you are doing. Hauling a bunch of high end-looking gear helps as well. If you look like you are there and are supposed to be doing it, like a photojournalism kinda thing, generally no one will harass you. Of nearly 4,000 pics in my portfolio here, more of them are candids than anything else, and it's a rare day when I get questioned.

Of course it has become sooo much easier since I don't wear my wide-brimmed floppy hat & raincoat anymore....

I wonder if a woman taking pictures has ever been called a pervert????

I take pictures all the time at the park, I usually just ask the parents if its okay to photograph their kids, give them a card... I have never had any one even question me.

Ever since you started wearing cloths under your trench coat you don't get harassed as much anymore, right?:)

This is why I'd rather take wildlife photos. Though it would suck being confronted by some paranoid whacko, it would only be reaonable to expect it to happen. Society has created this mess and this is the consequence. All it took is some nutcases distributing images for unsavory reasons and "poof", you get this scenario. It will only get worse and likely to the point where some form of registration is required for shooting in various locales.

I think the headlines will be more frequent and likely with far more dire consequences, especially when it comes to kids.

Sucks to be him and sucks to be an honest photgrapher.

I saw the 'rubber consultant' bit and wondered if, in a bout of subtle industrial espionage, he was taking photos of the inflatable slide. Am I on to something, do you think?

On a more serious note. I don't believe there is a genuine connection between photography and being a pervert, even being in a park. I would like to know where the publics fear of photography is not only stemming from but being reinforced and encouraged.
