I am thinking about getting more of my pictures online for friends and family to see.
I have a domain thorugh my ISP and was wondering about how I should go about building the site.
I have no HTML knowledge or any other programing knowledge for that matter.
I tried a program called Web Album Creator and was rather disappointed with the result.

Does anyone have any good tips for how to get around setting up a nice clean photoalbum?

Pay me?

*lol* If you have Photoshop you can easily make an online picture album - I don't know if you'd like it though since I haven't really tried it myself so I can't tell you how good or bad it is. I know it's very simple anyway.

I was put on to Gallery2 by Colda a couple of years ago and still use it for various installations for Organisations and friends sites, as well as sharing family pics on passworded sub-albums that only my family can access.
When I first started using it, the installation was a bit daunting and Colda gave me loads of help, but now most ISP's offer it as a one-click install using Fantastico or similar plugin for your website. See if you have a Fantastico icon in your website's control panel. If so there is a couple of gallery options there including Coppermine too (which for some reason I have never figured out and I do have some experience with these sorts of installations).
Once you've installed Gallery, you can customize it almost endlessly to integrate with your website and look like it is just a continuation of whatever design you have going. Without a single line of html or php!

works for me!

I'm a programmer, so I made my site using php and mysql. I wouldn't recommending doing this tho.

For my family pictures, I also upload them to Kodakgallery.com and send it around in a link. That way, my dad can buy 4x6 pictures and have them sent to himself. I don't have to deal with the order.

Otherwise, there's //picasaweb.google.com or you can post them here 8).

smugmug has been great for me. Fairly easy for the novice to set up:

Thnaks for the replies.
I gave PS a try and it actually makes rather nice flash albums.
I also downloaded Gallery2 and will give it a shot today.

What are you going to do if your friends and family want prints of your photos? I suggest a Smugmug account. It's easy to setup, easy to customize, and making prints available is a piece of cake. Besides, many people, including me, think Flash sites suck.

Interesting point about the prints.
Why do you think flash sites suck?

It's definitely something to consider. Smugmug does great prints too. They also have several gift items that you and your friends can buy with your photos on them. T-shirts, coffee mugs, playing cards, puzzles, yada, yada. I personally like the photo mouse pads.

Mainly because it's so slooooooooooooooow and I hate waiting for computers. I'm a programmer and I sometimes feel like I spend most of my time waiting for a stupid computer to do something. There are lots of other reasons to dislike flash though. Here's a few...

Just because I can't keep my mouth shut: I think flash sites are quite okay - they won't be very loved by Google, so don't expect an really high ranking in the seach engine, but other than that I don't see a problem with it - and it's quite possible to create a flash site that doesn't take a year to load.

Plus, of course, flash sites can make it so much funnier browsing the web :)

Ok I read through Jakob Nielsens page. Although I agree with his points on the usability limits flash items can impose on the page use, I don't think they apply as much when it comes to a simple photo album.
I feel that at least with the flash album that photohsop made automaticaly for me I get a clean and eye pleasing design which does what is most important for me. It shows thumbnails of the images and an easy way to navigate throught the album.
However, what comes to mind as I write this is that it will probably be an issue for me to easily update the album. I will probably have to re make the whole thing everytime I want to change something.

Oh well, I will give smugmug a try. :)
Do they deliver prints all over the world? My family is spread over 3 continents....

Yes, they do ship internationally.

I'm smug-norant so …
People are selling prints for profit - yes?
Can you sell FILEs? (ie Stock?) on SmugMug?
and ... is this an alleged alternative to creating backups?

Yes if you have a Pro -Account with smugmug you can sell prints for profit - Compare the different accounts here://www.smugmug.com/price/

Yes you can now sell "Digital Downloads" on smugmug for profit if you have a Pro Account - //www.smugmug.com/help/sell-digital-downloads

As far as an alternative for having an off-site backup it is a great thing to have but is very expensive to get them to mail you a DVD of the backup but the alternative (losing all your files) it is worth any amount of money IMO!

Here is the price for ordering backups:

*CD backup starts at $11.99 for the first 650MB, plus $11.50 for an additional 650MB.
DVD backup starts at $22.00 for the first 1GB, plus $5.00 for each additional 1GB.

They do have a lot of mods and you can fetch albums yourself.

Signup here: //www.smugmug.com/?referrer=kNBbNlNECSEWN and saver $5 and I receive $10 toward my renewal.

If anyone needs help customizing I will help any way I can although I am not here as much as I used to be just shoot me a pm.
