Please remember that when someone gives your photo a comment during voting that it is usually meant to be helpful. Many of us probably type our comments quickly as we go through the dozens of photos. I want to give my impressions and suggestion for what might have been done differently without having to worry about your tender feelings. Believe me, I would never say your photo is terrible - obviously that has no place here. But if I suggest a crop or an edit, I don't think that justifies a defensive reply.

Just want to remind someone out there to not have such a thin skin. If you don't agree with the comment giver or if they just didn't "get" your artistic vision, then don't click the little "this comment helpful" box and move on.

yeah i have had that happen, i think people feel the need to defend themselves or explain, may be better to just ask the commenter why they felt that way

But remember, it is a "comment" box, not a "critique" box.

I have to admit that your particular comment did get under my skin a bit for a single moment, but I don't really take it personally; i try to let the somewhat harsh comments roll right off, especially if the critisism is directed towards what i feel is a key aspect of my photo; i would stay mad all the time if i were to let myself be insulted by certain comments and commenters, life goes on

Precisely.

I like to think that when I'm voting a challenge's entries that I am looking at the final product of an effort put out by someone who is proud of their work. It is a gallery if you will. To me, it isn't the place to critique an image but a place to agree or not agree that the final product attains the goal set out by the challenge description. It's more a place where we, as photographers, can show our work and let each other know if our image works or not. It's not a place to give details about why the image doesn't work or why it does. I would rather critique an image from a member's portfolio than a final entry in a contest.

In challenges I would rather leave short concise comments about how good, or not, an image is and why, not how I would improve it. That's where people get peed off, when you try to make a suggestion to their already well thought out idea. It's obviously not what they expect to hear.

Am I making sense?

On the other side of the coin, some commenters are really not trying to be helpful. I hate to call people out but this is ridiculous:

I take time to do a full critique for a lot of my comments. (And can never seem to keep ahead of Karmat in the critique club!). I try to talk about good, bad, and everything in between. I try not to say what they did was wrong but (hopefully) things to try to see if they would make a difference. I know I've had comments like "you should have moved to the right to get a better angle" except there was a wall, river, cliff etc. to my right or something ugly to the left of my subject that I wanted to remove. We can only comment on what we see and not what is beyond the frame of the shot.

I was wondering if that was deliberate. :) You keep me on my toes (which reminds me -- I need to check it). :P

Asfar as the commenter that was "called out," I wouldn't get too upset about that particular one -- he didn't vote, and I think he knows the photographer of who he commented on.

A critique is a comment, but a comment is not necessarily a critique -- at least in my opinion. Constructive criticisim is nice to get (as far as I'm concerned) but every comment isn't going to be that. Are you saying that the comment box is no place for a critique? Or are you saying not to expect every comment to be a critique?

I disagree. If you're going to go so far as to say that my image doesn't achieve its final goal, or doesn't "work," I would hope some critique is in order -- even if it's one or two words: overexposed, poorly framed, etc.

I'm pretty sure she means the latter ... :-)

I think that if I recive a comment like - nice shot - is helpful too, cause it shows that your pic is good, and is working in the challenge.

Dang...I shouldn't have looked. I had 1 comment in the last two weeks :(

Alex has been on fire though! 34 in the last two weeks. And not two word comments either. Wow...

I never find these comments unhelpful - especially when they come from accomplished photographers. Plus, they are encouraging and when I read them I smile and walk away eager to shoot more.

LOL used the word "unhelpful" ...when I read it - it cracked me up. Trust, I will work on better syntax

I also have to agree, I like the "nice shots" and the "good jobs"
it makes me feel better about what I do, not that I need encouragement, but it just lets me know that *someone* at least liked it

and I think that sounds very diferent " nice shot" became for someone here in DPC than the same comment from your friends and family. That´s why I´m here. To learn and see if my photos work around the word. : )

Indeed, the latter. I was responding to

"Nice pic," is a comment not a critique. "Cool," is a comment, not a critique. "What were you smokin?" is a comment not a critique.

While no one seems to want these, they are "comments" in a "comment" box. I'm just happy that people take the time to push 8 or 10 buttons in response to my pictures.

So, yes, I am saying not to expect everything to be received to be a critique. That is unfair to those that leave their succinct and concise thoughts on the shots.
