First...please do not turn this into a McCain VS Obama thread !

Here is an email I sent to Cox cable:

Hello...I subscribed to the presidential candidate John McCain's email service a few months ago. I was receiving 1-3 emails a week. The service suddenly stopped.

After about a month or so, I went to Cox and unclicked the "spam" service. Now all my email comes through. Any email that was previously deleted by cox now comes through with "spam" in the title.

I received an email from John McCain and it had "spam" in the subject.

Please correct your system immediatley ! Take the spam designation off of the John McCain emails.

The emails have the return address of ecampaign@johnmccain.com

Thanks
kjs1@cox.net

I have since went and signed up for the Obama emails. It will be interesting to see if they are marked with "SPAM".

If I were you I'd tell my local newspaper about this... Seems worth a story.

Also, for a quick response, I'd email the John McCain camp with these details as well.

Thanks...I'll do it.

My email server started blocking my Warhammer game newsletter. I doubt my email server has anything against Warhammer. Similarly I doubt Cox has anything against McCain. It's probably just triggered by a large distribution trigger, key words, or something. Often times if the email consists of more graphic than text, they get flagged as spam.

I understand that and how the system works but Cox should obviously tag McCain AND Obama emails as 'NOT SPAM' and let them through. Blaming the "robot" is not acceptable!

Also...I held off on my letter to the newspaper pending the results of my "Obama" email request.

It's still a story even if both are on the spam list, ken...

I follow ya bear...I'm trying to key the letter now. I don't want it to come out sounding like I'm a "rambling bozo" !

You're overreacting.

It's a computerized filter. Your newsletter is triggering something generic and unless they go in and make an exception, it's going to be flagged as spam. Maybe no one has brought it to their attention. I'm sure if you contact them, they'll gladly add it to their exception list.

BTW... This seems very rude. "Please correct your system immediatley !"

I agree with the over reacting part, my ISP (Verizon) blocked DPC for ages! I put in requests that were repeatedly denied to let them through. They didn't even show up in my spam folder, they were completely blocked. Langdon had to contact them to fix it.

Look, people...

I don't see any "overreaction" here at all. I don't see anyone ranting or cursing or whatever. What I actually DO see is a situation where, for whatever technical reason, messages from candidates to voters are not going through, and I think that's a Bad Thing for the election and for the reputation of the internet.

I think it makes an interesting story for a tech writer in a newspaper. I think it is a situation that needs to be corrected. That's ALL.

Where's the overreaction?

I'm just saying it's a common thing. It happens all the time. The hype connected with the news just makes people who don't know too much about the internet even more ignorant. There would be conspiracy theories and political hijinks's blamed on the opposition. Blah, blah, blah. I still remember my grandmother's over reaction to my daughter using the internet years ago. She swore people would track her down and kill her after seeing a news story.

It was the tone in the email that was sent to the ISP. "Please correct your system immediatley !" is very demanding. That statement takes the email from being a bug report to accusing Cox of intentionally blocking messages from McCain. It's a bug and not news worthy, IMO.

I still say they should correct the problem immediatly !

I did not overreact ! I said "immediatly" because I'm not the only one affected. All McCain email is possibly being blocked by this "bug"! This is a hugh deal imo.

I disagree. I think it is newsworthy. I think when an automated system starts "accidentally" censoring messages during a political campaign, that this is newsworthy. It's not something that should be happening, and it's a big deal to me.

Question; how many real spammers are using the names McCain and Obama in their subject titles? Probably thousands. This is a glitch that will be corrected i'm sure, maybe only by Monday though. ;\

eta corrected spelling

I never did say it was intentional. However, I still want it cleared up right away. I feel..it is a very important time in the political process and the blocking of campaign emails either purposly on by accident is unacceptable.

Hey..I don't know about you. But I pay well over $100 a month for my internet/cable services. If they are screwing with any part of my life.....I want it corrected IMMEDIATELY.

I received an email from cox. Seems like it was from a "live" person. It said to send the blocked email to "thisisnotspam@cox.net" and they will look in to it.

I'm happy with the response and hope they will be more "careful" in the future !

I'll let you know what happens.

Just for a bit of perspective...I just checked my spam-diverted mail from Cableone and found two messages from the Obama campaign announcing events for last weekend.

Maybe ken and I should switch providers to get more-friendly-to-our-position "censors".

That's funny, I just flagged a McCain email as "spam".

When I do that, it reports that sender to my ISP as a spammer. Now, one person reporting an email as spam only affects their personal filter, but if enough people report an email or sender as "spam" the ISP will block it.

Sounds like McCain isn't very popular with Cox customers.

***UPDATE**** Please see original post for background.

After writing to Cox a few weeks ago, my John McCain updates started coming into my box without the "spam" ID. I then turned my Cox "online" spam blocker back on. McCain material made it through to my inbox.

I signed up for Obama updates and those came through also. Obama was never designated as spam but I like to keep up on all sides in politics so I subscribed to his email as well.

Well it has been about 2 weeks and guess what...the John McCain emails now contain the "SPAM" header. If you have Spam blocker from Cox, the McCain emails are never sent to your inbox.

By the way...I am getting my Obama emails with no problems and no "spam" designation.

I may be wrong but I now beleive that someone at Cox may be playing "God" with the political updates.

I will now send email to all major news services on this matter.

Thanks,

Kenny

Sounds like they are just making sure you get the "correct" information! ;-D

Seriously though, that's interesting. Curious to know what is causing the McCain e-mails to be flagged.
