Hi. I have a Canon rebel Xti, and do jewelry photography for my online shop. Price is the main issue right now so what are my best options?

Thanks!

Thanks for your response! I'm already doing my shots with my 17-85 and am not happy with it. I really want to go for the macro.

My current jewelry shots are these: //paperpatternsilk.etsy.com

And I am aiming more towards shots similar in feel to this :
//gemmafactrix.etsy.com
I am definitely not aiming for the traditional white background shots. More intimite modern ones.

If you are only shooting jewelry, then working distance shouldn't be too much of a problem. You could either use the EF 50mm or the EF-S 60mm, but I don't have any experience with either of these.

Regardless of what you want your background to look like, lighting is soooo important. I would look into some kind of lightbox, because of the nice even lighting it produces. I built my own, but you can buy one if you like.

Thanks life, I've built my own lightbox too, love it. :)

How about something like this? Canon f2.5 50mm macro These run about $250 on B&H. I have Nikkor lenses, but this is a pretty solid piece of kit and I imagine it will get you close to what you are looking to deliver in shots.

AND...like lifeafter2am says, lighting is very important with this type of work - a lightbox would be really useful here.

Thanks for all the help!

I'm thinking either the SigmaNormal 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS

or the CanonNormal EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Autofocus Lens.

The canon isn't in stock at bh right now though, and I really need to order this lens asap.

Hey, thanks for all the lighting suggestions, but I do think I have the lighting under control. Photography was my major for a year and a half, so I spent a pretty large chunk of time learning how to properly light things. What I want is extremely limited depth of field. I just cannot achieve the look I want with my current lens, and I have always wanted a macro.

I have spent a lot of time working with lighting and backgrounds. That is not the issue here. Please no one else tell me to learn about lighting.

I'm checking out extension tubes on bh, but most seem to be incompatible with EF-S lenses, are there any that are?

I use Canon extension tubes with all of my lenses and they work just fine. If you want a great macro lens, I'd try this one. It's only $455 on B&H.
