I am doing a wedding the end of next month. I have two second shooters (a couple) who both shoot Canon, as do I. They will have 40d's and will be doing most of the back of the church work as well as getting candids and assisting me a bit with the set up shots at the park before the ceremony.

Even though they will both be shooting Canon and realistically I have both of those cameras for back up, I think I would still like to rent an additional 40d + lens for myself. I have the 40d, 17-55 2.8 IS, and the 50mm 1.8. I also have a longer Sigma lens which I'm not planning to use because I don't care for the quality. I also have the 550EX flash. The reason for renting the additional body is so I don't have to switch lenses.

I plan to purchase a flash bracket and a diffuser next week so I can get the hang of using them. I have plenty of memory and batteries (10g memory, 5 batteries) - plus a laptop to download to if memory does become an issue.

So..What do you suggest that I rent for this event? Outdoor shots prior to ceremony. Indoor church wedding and reception hall reception.

I'm pretty sure I have most other things covered...I have a person designated by the bride and groom to get people for the photos, have done the engagement photos so I have a good feel for the bride and groom, will be going to the church itself next week to scope out the area (and to come up with plan B for pre-ceremony shots if the weather is bad), Have met with b/g and second shooters together to discuss types of shots they want and family groups - all in my notes.

I was thinking about renting the 85mm 1.8 Open for suggestions!

Why not just buy the 85 1.8?

70-200 2.8IS.
It's THE lens for portaiture - the bride, bride and groom, groom. It's also great for receptions, gettign in close during the ceremony, etc. It can be a tad long on the short end on a crop body, but still very useful.
The 85 1.8 is a lot better lens than the crappy (IME) 50 1.8, but the difference in view is about 1 step - so step in.
The 10-22 is a lens I use a lot during a weddding - great for fun and funky groups shots, overall scene shots, details (it can focus at about 2 inches), for get ready shots in tight spaces, etc.

Yes, but when you've bought it, you'll have it for a very long time indeed.

I thought about the 70-200. At least I'd look like a pro :) I hadn't thought about going wider with the 10-22. I agree that some of those wider shots are very cool looking and fun. Definitely something to think about to add, although I feel like I do need something longer as well. Thanks for the advice!

Yep...but just can't afford it right now. And, if I could, I'm not sure that's the next lens I would buy for most of my needs. I'm pretty sure I'd go for a much better quality zoom that what I have on the long end. Of course, thats even more....and it never ends :)

I recently worked with a wedding photog that used the 85mm f1.8 for at least 50% of the whole day and he has a very impressive arsenal of lenses too. The sharpness, speed and contrast of it for such a good price is unbeatable IMHO. I spent most of the day shooting with the 70-200 IS and my extremely old 28-80mm f2.8-4.0L

If you cannot afford to buy one then I strongly suggest USING one at the wedding if you can rent it.

Here are a couple of shots taken yesterday with the 85mm 1.8, its a great lens.. I have several more expensive L lenses, but as MAK said, I used this for at least 50% of the day..

Wait.. I wanna jump on the bandwagon! :-)

I *have* rented from //www.rentphotostuff.com/. I rented the 85 1.2L for 3 weeks. Awesome lens for portraits and weddings (not so much for dancing and other fast movement, use the 85 1.8 instead). Great company to work with. Highly recommended.

the best wedding set up is a canon 35mm 1.4 on a 5d. Cant beat it. Thats what I would rent if I didn't already have it.

Does anyone use the 50mm 1.2L?
05/24/2008 07:08:54 PM · #21
Anyone mention a gold reflector yet? Make that complection look fab. And a sliver one for the guys. No matter how much you spend on the lenses, your best dollar value is getting the light right. On your set shots get those two helpers moving around with reflectors and make those folks shine. Wether you spend $200.00 on a nice big 5 in 1, or buy something designed to keep your dashboard cool in the summer, fill that light.
