I'm going to New Zealand during August for a little bit, and my family knows nothing about it. Can anyone tell me the must-see things there? I know New Zealand is incredible, but I honestly know nothing about anywhere.

You lucky dawg! I bet that will be fun. I would LOVE to go to New Zealand.

How long are you staying there for? I'm going to be there around October.

Do you know which island you're going to?

i'm staying there only for 4-5 days, very short. Most of my time is being spent in Australia. I honestly have no idea which island I'm going to.

Ive been to NZ 3 times and my family and I are moving there at the end of this year.

Places to see, Cities, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown are the major spots. Out of the way places, forgive any spelling errors. (North Island) Rotorua Taupo area is amazing, The south island is where you will see all the snow capped mountain range, Famed Lord of the Rings sites etc. The north island is more city and farm land. Dotted with cows and sheep they do have a few active Volcanos on the north island.

If I am already there when any of DPC'rs are down there, I would be happy to show you around Wellington. If you have any other questions, Send me a PM. My wife is a Native Kiwi and can give you some good advice.

I really does help to know what island you will be in! Also what interests you? Touristy stuff? Scenery? Culture?

If you're driving through Waihi give me mum a wave, its the white wooden house up on the hill :)

Well my mom is willing to go to any island depending on which has the best stuff. I personally would love to look at the scenery the most. possibly some touristy stuff too, but mostly scenery.

We were there last Oct for too few days, stayed in Aukland and did a couple overnight tours. In Aukland itself, the museum and winter gardens are well worth the visit.

I strongly second Rotorua-Taupo. The geothermals are amazing, the scenery beautiful and the Maori culture and history permeates it all.

Also went to Bay of Islands (Russell and Waitangi). This is an important historical area as well as stunningly beautiful. We did a 6-hour boat trip which included time on an uninhabited island and, of course, a run through the Hole in the Rock. :)

I would recommend spending some of your time on an organised tour. We saw and learned so much more than we would if we'd explored on our own, which is what we'd originally planned. And now if (I mean WHEN) we go back we'll have a better idea on what/where/how to go/do/see.

Just a note of caution there are a lot of not so nice people live here. We are not a safe haven. there are thieves and rip off merchants here like any where else. In fact a British tourist, Karen Aims was murdered in Taupo by a 14 year old boy. Its not all doom and glom but be aware of the dangers

=S that's scary. Makes me uneasy about going there now.

Is South Island where Lord of the Rings scenery is?

Lord of the rings was shot all over both main islands. Some of the locations are really only accessable by helicopter but I believe there are still tour companies doing LOTR tours around the country. Queenstown is really nice & there is so much to do that you could spend all your time there & still have not done it all. It is however not the cheapest town in NZ. The Bay of Islands is definetly worth consideration and also Coromandel. 4-5 days is way to shorter time to cover it but where ever you end up will have been worth coming. There are plenty of local tour companies doing day trips out of all the major cities. If you want to see as much of NZ in 4-5 days then I definetly reccommend this way of doing it.

I'm going to be in the south island for about 8 months from January onwards if anyone wants to meet up. Probs gonna be around Dunedin and Queenstown for the most part.

Well for a combination of touristy stuff you are probably best to go to either Rotorua-Taupo in the North Isl;and or around Queenstown in the South Island. Both these areas are very scenic and cater well with a lot of tourist activiities.
Rorotrua-Taupo is probably more cultural and Queenstown more thrillseeking if that helps narrow your search at all!

Queenstown in August will be nice :) It will be full of tourists though and you will pay tourist prices! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. There are a few DPC members down south you might be able to hook up with one of them

Don't step on any Hobbits while you are over there and take lots of pictures, especially of any Hobbits you find!

oh hah. It's a bit hard for a 17 year old to manage a trip without my family being involved. I don't even know how to book a ticket to the airport :P

So far I've told my mom about Rotorua-Taupo and Queenstown, as the majority of you guys seem to recommend it. But i forgot about my cousin being married to a native kiwi, so I think i'm going to ask him as well while I'm in Australia.

Thanks for the help everyone :)
