They were released at around the same time, They are close in price, say you had no investment in either company already, which would you buy?

I'm assuming you meant to type Nikon D300 correct?

The D200 was release well before the 40D.

Now, the D300 was released around the same time as the 40D.

You could do a side by side compare at dpreview.

You might have to run into your local electronics store and do a side-by-side comparison.

Compare:
Weight
Comfort in your hands
Features
Access to these features/functions
Other misc...

A saying I once heard: "Canon has good body features w/access but Nikon has the better quality glass"

Take that for what it's worth.

Oh, my mistake. You are right, the D300 came out with the 40D. So the 40D and D300 are the cameras to be compared? Dang, the D300 is quite a bit more expensive. With the D200 being priced about the same as the 40D, would it be a mistake to take the d200?
05/04/2008 09:37:16 PM · #6
No it would not!

No! I love it and.....well...... It's a Nikon. They sponsor the NY Mets.

Short of getting into the Nikon / Canon wars I would say that both the 40D and the 200D are comparable. IMO the Nikon D200 will give you a better build and waterproof seals, they are built like a tank. The 40D will likely give you better noise proformace. Other than that I would doubt that you could tell the difference once you are commited to one or the other. You will be happy either way.

I'm really not impressed by the noise performance on my friend's 40D, but maybe that's because the D300 looks stellar.

As for the Canon = body features and Nikon = better glass, I've heard the opposite. Well, sorta. I wouldn't say Nikon has worse glass than Canon, but Canon DOES have more. Nikon has some absolute killers like the 14-24 f/2.8 and the 28mm f/1.4 (if you can find one), but Canon has a wider variety. Both are good. Nikon, IMO (and in many many others as well) makes much more ergonomically friendly cameras than Canon, with better button layouts, nicer looking menus, and just a nicer, more solid feel in your hands.

I learned to photography, by my self. But based on analog cameras. Then I bougt a Nikon and had used others. My simply POV is that Nikon cameras was made by photographers to photographers. All in it had a perfect place and the effective controls to a shot is easy to access and view.

The times passes by... Now I had a Canon. What a diferent performance! Canon looks to me like a software camera develop by programmers. Not ever useful features is easily found. But it was my first impression. Once more the time passes by and I felt confortable with my Canon body.

Really, Canon has a great glass line and actually is the most inovative brand. Nikon's fame cames from the durable "built like a tank" bodys of II war period. A thing I consider of great value is that Canon has the complete digital camera's part development. All key pieces are made and develop by Canon, including the sensor and the image processor, that seams complete compatibility of all EOS line. Nikon uses a wide variety of brands to develop it's components, including Fuji and SONY, that made most of sensors. Nikon has a great list of issues of compatibility in each body model launched.

Sounds nice, a little out of my price range though. That's why I'm thinking about either the D200 or the 40D

If you've got the spare cash laying around and the intestinal fortitude,
you might want to try a used D200 with low mileage. They can be had used for as low as 700 bux US used sometimes. If you can't live without the one year warranty it's probably not a good idea. But..... Nikon has a good rep with making good any body specific defect that they take responsibility for. IE
the D2H had a bad meter board that went bad well after warranty but they still made it good even for those who had bought second hand.

I love my D200 but it's a heavy beast. If you're buying new I'd really think about the 40D.

Take a look at DPReview.com. They provide an extremely concise review of all cameras without bias.

whatever you choose, they're both great cameras. I just got myself a 40d a few days ago and I love it. The image quality is a big step up from the rebel series.

Also released in the fall of 2007 ==> Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Review

Other 'Finalists' for 2007 ==> CAMERA OF THE YEAR 2007 FINALISTS

There is certainly a wonderful list of choices, whatever you decide, in the marketplace currently.

Good luck! :-D

You're not going to notice any difference between the two with regards to image quality, no matter how many extra megapixels, the d300 has over the canon! The d300 is I'm sure a fantastic camera and it may even be better than the 40d (depends how you measure that, doesn't it? and is it £350-400 better?). In fact, I very nearly opted to change my 40d and canon setup for it! Reason, well I've started to do a bit of HDR, and the nikon would allow me to take 9 auto bracketed exposures in comparison to 3 of the canon! Also, the LCD screen is an absolute marvel and that alone nearly made me get my wad out! It really is that good!!! However, the nikon's layout seemed a bit overwhelming, and the menu isn't as intuative as in the canon - this isn't a major thing though, because you'll get accustomed to it anyway! but its something which I think the canon has an advantage in, in comparison! The other thing which I think you need to consider more than the camera, is the lens choice and price! Now, I'm not going to tell you which lenses are better, canon or nikon? because IMHO they're as good as each other! However, Nikon, like for like, tend to be more expensive, certainly here in the uk anyway - but that doesn't apply to every lens of course!!! just in my experience, with the small no. of lenses I've looked at, I've noted this to be true!

I'm in no way endorsing one brand over the other simply because I have a certain system, because I think people are stupid if they do that! I'm not bothered whether more photographers are using canon than nikon, it doesn't inflate my ego to know that you're using what I use based on my recommendation!!! I had my particular reasons for choosing what I have based on my needs, finance, research etc, and all I'm offering are my unique thoughts and experience based on the fact that I too have been pondering this same question!

In the end, I've opted to stay with my 40d - it isn't better and it isn't worse than the nikon...its just right for me at the present moment in time! ;-)

Well, I will say that the Nikon cameras are at the top regarding ergonomic features (and extremely intuitive). Most of the time, you do not need to use any menu if you are using a D200/D300 camera. Subsequently, the menu for such a camera is rather not important.

Regarding the body ergonomics, the D200/D300 is unbeatable!

So....everybody is pretty passionate about their own brand. All the posts below can be summarized like this:
Canon has better this -> reply: no actually, nikon has better that
nikon has better whatever -> reply: in my opinion canon is better at that
and so on...

The way i see it is this: the canon and nikon cameras are priced a few hundred $ appart. Decide how much you can spend and then go for the camera that falls on that price range. Buying the latest technology is probably a good idea. Image quality of both is superb and actually the body is not going to affect image quality as much as the glass you put on it. Both nikon and canon glass are awesome. You'll be happy with either, if you are not, then you are probably being biased by something you read or heard about canon/nikon being better than the other.

My advice is: go to the store and see which one feels better in your hands, if that's not an option go based on price alone. Another thing to consider is what your friends have. If you shoot the same brand/system you can share gear with them.

Hope this helped
K

Edited to add this: Ergonomics matter, but you'll get used to whatever you own. The same goes for menu layout, etc
