I'm getting a possible opportunity to travel to California (Scotts Valley nr. San Diego) for a prelonged stay, BUT because I'm only 24 (and a UK resident) it will be hard for me to get a rental car..

Can anyone recommend a company that will give rental cars to 24 year old foreign visitors?

Ooooh Paul, sounds fantastic... how long is prolonged? What will you be doing? When would this be?

Best Idea is let me drive you, all I ask in return is accommodation and spending money :)

Probably be 'about six weeks', so the boss said. But this is still up in the air atm, with a rental car being one of a few possible issues..

I've never had problems renting a car before I was 25. They might require an extra insurance premium, but I and several family members have rented cars before 25 without problem.

Hi Paul, How exciting! California is a nice place to visit. You said you were going to Scotts Valley. If I'm not mistaken it's not near San Diego, but closer to San Francisco, between San Jose and Santa Cruz.
Have fun!

I have worked for about more than year in the US, while I was 24, and I rented cars a lot of time without any problem.

I rented them with my french driving licence, at several rental companies (Hertz, National Car Rental,...); it's true that some of them sometimes ask fo an extra insurance, but it's still possible to get a car.

It can be easier if you get it booked through your company policy, if they have one with any rental firms.

An international drivers license can also help, but typically you just have to pay more insurance is all that happens.

I would not give you my car because you guys drive on the wrong side!

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

The boss said yes, so I'm off to Silicon Valley, CA for 6 weeks on Wednesday!
