After doing a little googling, I was surprised to find that triangle composition does not require 3 subjects in equipoise, but often refers to a centered subject set off by triangles of negative space in the upper corners, or a triangle of light illuminating the subject. Not being much of an art historian, this totally escaped me ... and no doubt will escape most of the voters as well.

Triangle composition in art

A few nice photographic examples can be found here as well.

thank you it hasgiven me a few ideas and a new insight into the subject! Just hope the voters read it too!

Since voters won't read this, can we get a rule exception that we can draw our triangle "hint" right on the photo? :)

Thanks for posting that, very interesting.

Let's sticky this to every forum on this board to make sure everyone reads it. /jk

so it seems that we shouldnt actually have a real triangle but rather our subject placed in a way that forms a triangle?

I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of just plain old triangles in this one.

Unfortunately the way many people vote here, once they see "Triangle" in the challenge title, they will DNMC anything that doesn't hit you over the head with an actual triangle. I'm not touching this one.

I am on the fence with this challenge. I think there are too many close minded voters that dont like to think outside the box and this is defenetily an outside the box kinda thinking challenge. I like it, but I dont know if I am up to the fustration. :(

I'm going to try to meld both ideologies together and come up with something.

It is hoped....

Just make sure it includes an extremely obvious triangle. :)

Hehe. It's probably true that subtlety is not the best approach. Who wants to spend time playing "find the scalene triangle hidden in the composition"?

If everyone were to use the "suggested" or compositionally subtle triangle, perhaps voters will get the message. Great post btw. THis makes me more optimistic about what we may see in this challenge.

I am excited about this challenge!... I am not very good at photography to be honest but thats why I compete... I enjoy the challenge and I love what I learn... I hope to learn more about photographic compostition in this competition. I may not even get around to submitting an entry but I will definetly spend some time researching the topic and trying to accomplish this idea... I hope I learn something new...

That's a great link, thanks for that!

I agree we will have a lot of DNMC voting from people expecting a hit-you-over-the-head, obvious triangle, rather than a compositional style. I'm a glutton for punishment, though.

That article linked at the top was useful to let me know my potential entry does fit. I have some good ones over the weekend, that unfortunately, have way to much detail to work at 640 pixels, after resizing and compression to 150k, they look like garbage.

I tried to create a subtle triangle, surrounding an obvious one. It will definitely have that hit over your head triangle shape in it, and I am hoping that the surrounding background will lead the eye inward toward the subject, in a geometric configuration. I did have fun. My first attempts I strictly created triangles of light around the subject. Did not like it. Was too vanilla for me. So I went out again today, saw some interesting subjects, and hope that most will be happy with the entry. I loved it myself. Wish I could say what it is. I was very excited to get it, believe me.

I fully agree with this, in fact i have two potential entries ready to submit, one is a triangle composition that my wife was unable to see until i pointed her out, although for me it was very clear, and the other one is an obvious triangle that i think many voters will score high. I had a dilemma.

Maybe a wider description will help in that kind of challenges.

well for once in my life, I have 3 shots to choose from, and I can not make my mind up, they are all triangles in a sutble slap you upside of the head kinda way

I was going to post one of my outtakes for any poor souls last minute ideas.... I was going to submit something like this (taken april 28th so unusable to me). The prompt is that the subject must be within a triangle, which I didnt catch until recently. I was trying to find patterns of triangles like an idiot.

I cant figure out thumbnails sorry

This photo I think is a mediocre representation of the prompt (not the best photo) as the subject is within a infferred and nearly linear triangle. The subject is centered but drawn off center with body posistion so it is not entirely static, and the repeated downward lines create motion or movement. I dont particularly like the picture, but I know sometimes I have trouble with prompts, and wish someone did this for me.

Oh and feel free to contridict or critique my analysis of my photo or the prompt, really.

Sean - to be honest, if I didnt have that description I'd never see a triangular composition. I think if you put something like that in, you'll get a lot of DNMC's.

i saw it immediatly, the legs, shape of his nose, the leaves pattern

mind you that could have something to do with just rescueing a spiny lizard from teh cats jaws

^ thank you
^^ not everyone sees it around here, thats why the blue ribbons have 7's, and I admitted it was a bad photo. However if I am going to put triangles in, they damn well better not be obvious, otherwise what sets me apart from the 80 soccer "parents" who put in yield signs and mountain peaks. I honestly don't care if I fail anymore on this site, but I love trying to go avant guarde, just to see what happens. Thank you for your honesty though

No really. She has literal triangles slapping people upset the head. Kind of a "Wow I could have had a delta-8!"

Juliet, have you already choosen between your three potential entries? I do not want to stress you, but time flies :-)
