Legal or not legal?

Can I use Photomatrix Tonemapping plug-in with Photoshop CS3 under basic editing rules? No HDR, just TM plug-in.

Nope. There used to be a notice about it on the main site page. guess it's old news and was taken down.

I went back to to that thread and at first it said it could not be used then later on, I believe TM, was allowed in basic. I have read several threads that are contradicting each other and no time to ask the SC for validation.

Any Site Council members here??? to answer this question.

Thanks in advance.

Tone mapping is not legal if you use Photomatix. No other tools are explicitly mentioned in the tool based Basic rule set, but in the spirit of the rule, any method which does tone mapping the same way as Photomatix would technically be illegal. We need to clarify that.

Thank you. I will pull this entry and save it for the free study and put a backup in it's place.
Thanks again for the info.

It's been a gray area, and some of these may have been validated even while photomatix was illegal. However, I don't have CS3 right here, but I believe there are several choices of algorthm when you convert back to 16 bits, and one of the algorithms used for tonemapping is basically the SAME as photomatix. So it's a risky proposition, and this will very likely be called out as illegal during any clarification of the rules.

I was about to enter last night for the first time in months, but also was unsure about tone mapping using Photomatix.
The rules are incredibly unclear, so I decided not to enter.
This really should appear on the basic challenge rules.

Yes, I realized from this thread that now that it's off the front page, it's not anywhere. I've started the process for a rule clarification.

Thank you! and Thanks for your quick reply so I could pull my entry before rollover.

I've been here for almost four years, 112 challenges, with no DQ's. I was within 10 minutes of a possible DQ entry when it popped into mind about seeing something about Photomatrix last year. It would have been depressing to me to be DQ'ed by something that is not clearly stated in the rules.

I've been reminded by another SC member that currently Photomatix is covered under the basic rules as "an effect filter". However, as at least I personally don't consider it an effect filter (even though it can be used as one), I've initiated a process to try and clarify the rules.

As an example, this is tonemapped using Photomatix.

While that's also HDR, I often (in advanced of course) use the tonemapping plug-in as a better version of shadow highlight.

was there any outcome to this?

Yeah, I'd like to second that. My entry for the Rural Landscape is under review right now, and one of the commenters on my entry has indicated the Photomatix tone-mapping is illegal (on a single file, even)...but I don't see anything in the basic ruleset that might lead me to this conclusion. SC?

David - I was the one that stated the Photomatix Pro was illegal in basic. But from what I recall, and I am sure others may remember, there was specific language in the rules set that stated that Photomatix Pro was not allowed.

I recall significant discussion on this topic - especially from the likes of Bear_Music who eloquently stated that the basic tonemapping does basically can do the same actions as Shadows/Highlights (still legal in basic). However, at the time SC suggested that Photomatix was illegal.

However, the rule set as I just read them did not say anything specific about Photomatix, so now I am as confused as you....!

Just after I did my video tutorial on DPP, Photomatrix and PS, a Site Announcement came out stating that PhotoMatrix, Virtual Photographer and Lucis Arts are no longer allowed in Basic. I cannot find those 'specific' Site Announcements...but I did find this link.

PhotoMatrix Rulings.

Why is it not in the rules set? How are people to know what is allowed that have not read the SC ruling thread?

I posted that link two posts earlier. What I was having trouble locating is the actual Site News notice that was originally on the left hand side of the home page!

Straps on the Lie Detector Test Machine

Please answer just yes or no to the following question.

No

(tears off straps from lie detector) Yes-No questions are not only easy to answer, but you can't be wrong because you can't be right. I don't even know or care what the answer is really, but I've read the thread and I would have thought it was obvious.

Ar but Raish, Neil said it was illegal to use, then he was reminded by another SC member that it was legal. So which is it!???? lol
