i've got a d300 but am looking for something smaller that i can take around a little easier. i've been looking at the leica d lux3 but wonder if anyone has any other suggestions. as far as things to consider...

size- compact
lens- wide angle, low aperture
format- raw images
full manual capabilities

thanks for any thoughts!!!

The biggest single issue is shutter lag. Pretty much everything else ends up being secondary if you are wanting to do 'street photography' which I'm assuming includes people.

Most small point and shoots have really terrible lag which can be quite frustrating. There are a few notable exceptions.

I'd be interested. (By low aperture do you mean good in low light and/or wide open, like less than f2.8?). I would also look for a tilt and/or twist lcd. (I've already constructed this camera out of various parts of various cameras in my head but no manufacturer has tuned in).

• Leica D-Lux3
• Lumix L1
• Leica Digilux 3
• Leica M8

all 4, IMO, would suit the purpose, at varying price points

If memory serves, the Leica is just a re-labeled Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2. The camera is probably a decent candidate for what you want to do; I do see that the lens on the D-lux 3 is much slower than on the D-lux 2. That seems to put the newer camera at a big disadvantage for street photography... much less DoF control and poorer low-light performance.

• D-Lux 2 > F 2.8 - F 8.0 (W) F 4.9 - F 8.0 (T)
• D-Lux 3 > F2.8 - F8.0 (w) F4.9 - F8.0 (t)

You're correct, I was thinking of the Digilux 2.
